Screen Thingy

I've had me big green egg 4 a few months now & have cooked ribs, chicken, steak, burgers, dogs, even some brownies, & with each cook I have never used the screen thingy on the bottom vent. What is the screen 4? When would I use it & why would I use it? Just something I've been wondering about. I don't recall the instructional dvd mentioning it, but I may have missed it. :silly:

It's to keep ash from falling out.

You should have the screen closed when using the egg, it's there to prevent any burning pieces of lump from coming out.

the screen prevents hot coals from falling onto a wooden deck, blowing ito a leaf pile, blowing into a garage, and starting a fire. been a few here over the years, you want to use the screen

Well others have answered your question, but it's the same reason you have a screen thingy covering your fireplace, so the coals don't pop and come out.

is that what the screen thingey is for, i thought it was to catch the squirrel that comes down the chimney when your not using it :laugh: :laugh: still burning wood to keep warm up here and that squirrel that ate the inside of the camp is no more

It also serves as a spark arrestor. Sometimes sparks do come flying out the bottom vent.

Has anyone noticed if you can still get one of those bottom flashbacks if you have screen in place?

I found this marble size burning ember - thanks to the screen it caused no problem! Think of it as a cheap insurance policy!

I think is was Chris (the Dizzy Pig man) who's house burnt down due to a spark flying out of the bottom vent. The 'screen thingy' prevents such an event.

BTW, as I recall Chris' egg was on a cement driveway.
