Chipped Dome Chimney - - HELP!!!

<p />Well, yesterday I did it. I was lifting the daisy wheel off using tongs. I grabbed the coathanger and lifted up. As I did, the unbalanced weight of the wheel caused the tongs to slip to one side of the coathanger. Seems that the ends of the coathanger were not bent far enough, and the high end slipped out of the wheel. That side of the wheel dropped, hit the chimney and you can see the results.[p]How bad is it? Is it just cosmetic, or am I looking at the start of a continuing degredation process radiating outward from the chip? Do I need to repair it? Is there anything I can do to repair it?[p]I need the benefit of the collective experience in the Forum, and I thank you for it.[p]BTW, it might be a good idea to check the ends of the coathanger on your daisy wheels. Maybe use a pliers to pinch the ends a little closer together just so this won't happen to you.[p]Thanks for your suggestions.[p]A sad DobieDad

DobieDad,[p]That looks like alot like mine 4 years ago. Mine is well seasoned and has that natural burnt lump look to it like the inside of the dome.[p]Mike

  • Get yourself a pair of welding gloves. They are about 10 to 15 dollars at Home Depot or Lowe's. Then you can pick up your hot daisy wheel instead of having it bump around with awkward handling and cause damage.

    Roger,
I understand the pain! Rutland makes a cement/mortar that would probably do the trick. Then to go further I found an acrylic craft paint in an artsy-craftsy store made by Anita's - their #11040 Hunter Green is pretty close to the BGE shade. After that the ring of cresote will turn it black.

    DobieDad,
For me that is one of those kinds of things where I might say "sh**t", or maybe "damn". Then I'd say, "Man, gotta be more careful. I should be grabbing that with my hand (or gloved hand)"[p]But that is all I'd do. It alwas looks worse when you first do it. two years down the road it'll be filled with gunk and you'll see it one day and say "oh yeah, this thing is chipped! I forgot about that. Look how th gunk has filled it in and you can hardly see it!"[p]Hee
    I'm spatch-freakin-cockin a chicken over here tonite. What's cookin?
    Cheers
    Chris

    DobieDad,
Looks like you chipped a tooth. It's not structural damage, more cosmetic. You can file the edge smooth. I'd rub some of that black residue over the white to hide it.[p]I allready tightened up the bail on my daisy wheel.[p]Say, can I get you a beer? It's Miller time.

    Car Wash Mike,
WOW - now tell the truth - you were just waiting to read that "beer" word to trip that trigger! Right?

My rim on my dome had a dip in it that I needed level out when I got my MickeyT rings. I just used Rutland 600 silicone. Has held up for about 4 months, even thru 700+ degree cooks.[p]Toy Man

    DobieDad,
I just wonder if you get to a Marine store and get some 4500, then, Big Green Egg makes a touch-up paint to cover the 4500. That stuff is so hard that when it dries, you have to drill through it!
    Just a thought.[p]Uncle Phil

    DobieDad,
You won't believe this, but tonight, I chipped my dome too. Damn wheel was hotter than I thought. So, how DID you fix yours?
I may try the Marine 4500 and some touch-up paint unless you got a better idea.[p]Stupid Uncle Phil!!!!###$$#%^^^
