No daisy

I have been cooking lately without using the daisy. Open top. It takes a little practice, but I kinda like it. Do most of you cook with open top or daisy?[p]Jerry

    Jwirlwind, That sounds kinda personal. I only leave them off if I'm shootin for over 400°. Just my Eggs setting.

    I have done it both ways. Was cooking with the top off until I started using MickeyT's rings.[p]Now I use the rings and generally leave the bottom open.[p]Toy Man

    When I first got my Egg, there was no instructions or video or anything to tell me how it worked. I just had to figure it out myself. Since I didn't get a daisy wheel to adjust my temperature I simply tilted the rain cap at different angles and adjusted from the bottom vent. I could easily maintain any temperature I wanted from 210° to 350° for hours on end. Not a problem. Then one day I showed a photo of my Egg in action and someone suggested I get a daisy wheel control. I did and life has been better, but I think I could easily revert to just the basics if I had to. I actually believe it has something to do with getting to know your Egg. Happy Easter...[p]Spring Chicken

    Probably no advantage, just experimenting. I just did a whole rack of wings without daisy. The bottom vent was open maybe 1/2 at the most. Temp stayed at 375 and they were great. [p]Jerry

    They are measured holes drilled into a round piece of wood that sits on top of the Egg instead of the daisy wheel. You have different size holes for different temps.I don't have the pictures of them, but I am sure someone will. [p]Jerry

    Jwirlwind,[p]I know what you mean. I brought my large out the lake this weekend and forgot my daisy wheel. I used the rain cap on it's edge to maintain temp. It took a few minutes to figure out how to maintain a particular temp, but it worked out fine. I egged some of the mnost wonderful fantastic hot chicken thighs I've ever had without a daisy wheel tonight. I'll bring my daisy wheel back tomorrow for my ribs, but in any event, it works fine. I still would rather work with a daisy wheel because I do not have to remove it each time I open the egg. That has value to me.[p]Cheers,[p]GrillMeister

    Just thinkin' out loud here... as long as there isn't a lot of wind pouring oxygen into your egg from the top, I don't see any reason that you would need anything other than the bottom vent control. A windy day might present a problem maintaining a low temperature, but otherwise it should be okay. I think your eggsperimentin' is right on target.[p]When I use a Guru, I set the top (daisy wheel or slider) so that it doesn't blow smoke out the gasket, only through the top. I'm sure the top is not involved in temperature control at that point. That's all being handled by what is allowed through the bottom vent.
