BGE table - why a hole?

Is there a reason why BGE tables predominantly are table tops with a hole cut in, rather than, say, a split-level bench, with low part putting the egg at proper height and high part at counter/work height? Is there any safety/protection gained by nesting the egg into a hole?
Sorry if this has been addressed before, my search-mojo not working for me on this question.
TIA

I think you pretty much answered your own question.
The table with the egg recessed into it offers a place to work as you cook, as well as some protection for your egg.

The egg is stable enough without sitting in a hole. A lot of tables just have a back and end piece, a u-shape, if you will. The hole does add protection, especially if you have small children or large dogs!
