Am I missing anything by not having a BGE?

Besides being fragile & difficult to move around, the felt gasket coming off, internal ceramic parts cracking (like the firebox, the ceramic grate), & dealing with flashback, the high purchase price and the low amount of cooking area.[p][p]

    Mark Backer,
the beauty of guinness is that when your glass is half full, the bartender is already filling another for you.

    sir-drinks-alot,
I believe your problem is that you have never had the pleasure or opportuniy to consumed some of the outstanding food that many of the fine cooks that own BGEs are known for. Think Green, it's still close to St. Patricks Day![p]I like your handle,

    sir-drinks-alot,
If you're talking about fried gaskets; cracked fireboxes; weighs a lot; can be difficult to move around; all of the things you pointed out, then you are not missing anything![p] However If you're talking about wanting a challenge out of the ordinary to learn a new way of cooking; a product that does as advertised; a company who stands behind it's product with great customer support; great results from a cooker nearly every time, a great forum where ideas about cooking and other issues are discussed, and where friendships are formed; where the food and results attained are often compared to restaurants; where owners of the BGE are constantly trying to improve on their skills; where various owners have devoted resources to help their fellow BGE owners have good results then yes you are missing something by not having a BGE.
That's my position, and I'm sticking to it!

    sir-drinks-alot,
Lets address your concerns individually.[p]1)being fragile:
I know that there have been a couple of poeple reporting major accidents, but from what i've seen BGE stands by their product and will make good on replacement parts. Before building my table, I tipped my large over a couple of times on a concrete patio, without so much as a scratch and just this winter, heavy snow loads brought down my gutters, destroying my 60,000 btu gas grill, but not a scratch to the Egg right next to it.[p]2)difficult to move around:
The BGE is essentially a cooking chamber, it's a bit heavy and a little cumbersome, but just like any large object, with proper body positioning and leverage and a modicum of physical ability, it's actually fairly easy to move by itself, place it in a table with properly positioned wheels and it becomes very easy. Now if you want to compare it to the cooking chamber of some other grills or competition BBQ rigs, how easy are they to move around without their wheels?
    [p]
    3)the felt gasket coming off:
Thats more of a personal thing. Many people here overreact to the first signs of gasket deterioration and jump too soon at replacement. From what I understand, gasket replacement is fairly easy, but I wouldn't know firsthand because I've only had my Egg since June of 1998 and haven't needed to replace mine yet. [p]4)internal ceramic parts cracking (like the firebox, the ceramic grate):
Again, BGE stands behind their product 100% and all of these parts are guaranteed free replacement for LIFE. Add to that, the BGE under most circumstances is fully funtional while awaiting delivery of your replacement parts.[p]5)dealing with flashback:
This is only an issue when cooking at temeratures unattainable to most other cookers. Only ceramic users can access full enjoyment of this particular phenomenon. Most people know full well how to avoid it, but choose not too, it's kind of like bungee jumping without the risk of smashing your skull on the rocks below.[p]
    6)the high purchase price:
Compared to your 1987 YUGO, maybe?[p]7)and the low amount of cooking area:
Again, compared to what exactly? I can grill 6-1# ribeye steaks at once at more than 800 degrees, and less than an hour later be all set up with 2-11# pork shoulders and a 16# beef brisket on the EGG smoking away at 200 degrees for the next 22 hours, all on the same load of lump charcoal. Is that not enough cooking area? Okay fine, I'll buy another.[p]I think you forgot to mention all those nasty brick oven pizza's that Eggers have to choke down on your list of imaginary faults.[p]Cheers [p][p]

    Hammer,
I gotta hand it to you, we are in total agreement, but again you come across much more concisely and profound, all without giving the troll the impression that he's just been told to take a dump in his fist. You make me look bad.[p]I believe I'll have a drink in your honor sir,

  • Mark Backer,
I'll do better than that, just give me the address, you'll be doing ribs all day everyday![p]Cheers,
