Ever see a yellow gandy dancer? This is how it now works and what is happening from Chicago to St. Louis for the high speed rail.

Here is a video that shows you how the concrete ties and rail are put in place. The road bed was raised 13 inches . There are only two of these track laying machines in the world, one here and one in Europe

    Thanks Ron.

looks like the machines UPRR had years back when working on their triple track.

Went by it on a train, so couldn't a real good look, we were going at a high rate of speed, LOL!

    pretty ingenious.

i understand that a similar rig for repaving is in development. might just be on paper. ...but the idea is to have a half-mile long rig that operates at highway speed, maybe 40-50 miles an hour, that leaves a road behind it.

sounds to me like a whole hell of a lot could go wrong real fast, but i dunno.

here in Mass they are replacing the 10 year old concrete ties with wooden ones...they were cracking...big debate if the concrete is faulty/can't take the stress, if it was the T here in mass (sometimes the trains feel like they have square wheels), or something else, but I do know there are some other states with similar problems...

Now the machine is pretty cool though...

    you mean "the rattler"? :)

I hate it when I go to the kitchen for food and all I find are ingredients!

I saw them at the world of concrete one year and they still send me literature  You can't maneuver that thing to build a pool deck  Still an impressive machine for large jobs.

    Nice post Wess!

Did you notice the way the trees were getting blown around in the upper left hand corner shortly after it started to rain? Spooky . . .
