The E Ink technology used on the Kindle is exactly the same that is used on the Nook and Sony. Owning and using both the kindle an nook there is no difference (on our two units anyway).

I haven't looked into sharing books on an account with Amazon as we only have one Kindle. As I understand it all the people on one account can buy books also - so one would have to trust the folks put on the account or de-register them. I am not sure if two or more people on the same account can have access to the same book at the same time.

Some, not all, books can be loaned on Kindle and Nook. The option is up to the publisher and the loan period is 14 days the last time I looked into the feature. The book, if eligible, can be loaned to anyone, however, the owner looses access to that book during the 14 day loan period.

Owning both a Nook and Kindle without any additional options the Nook has access to books via the library system. However, after reading Rod's post evidently the epub books can be converted to AZW format (Kindle format) which for me makes the Nook/Kindle question only to a point if one wants a changeable battery and extra memory, neither of which is that big of a deal.

I doubt one would ever need additional memory. The changeable battery is only an issue if one wants to keep their original reader when a new battery is eventually needed.
