Replacing bottom damper

Unknown
edited November -0001 in EggHead Forum
I am replacing the bottom damper on my large bge. The local shops don't know squat about the egg. It looks like I need a gasket between the damper and the egg. Any ideas?

    Texas Fred,
use highheat resistant black silicone. it is a very easy project

  • When I replaced mine a while back I saw where the original was sealed using clear silicone. At first, I didn't bother to seal it. But after my first cook I went back and sealed it with the clear stuff just as it had been before because when I closed off the egg to dwell you could hear the air drawing in around the damper and air was still getting to the burning lump. The egg would backfire like that old Chevy truck I had back in high school![p]I suppose the high-temp silicone would work quite well, but mine had the clear stuff and the old damper had been on that egg for many years. So many years that the old black damper had rusted away and wouldn't hardly close anymore. Hence the replacement. Besides, I had the clear stuff on the shelf in the shop and that saved me a trip to WallyWorld.[p]Certainly go with a new stainless steel damper. One of the best upgrades I ever did. I can't believe I fought with the old black one for as long as I did.

    Texas Fred,
After my original bottome damper rusted and I couldn't move it anymore I replaced it with a SS one. I did not use a gasket or sealer and I have not had problems with temp control.[p]Dennis

Texas Fred,[p]You might have run into what I did. When I took the screws out from the old one, it loosened up the holes a tad so when I replaced them with the new SS screen, the screws don't hold it as tight as it did. So I have a pretty big gap between the vent and the egg. I just plugged it up with sealant and that worked out, although I'll tell ya, next time I may put some gasket material there. Not a bad idea.[p]mShark
