Bad choice under the circumstances?

Unknown
edited November -0001 in EggHead Forum
I just found out my good cholesterol is low and my bad is high. Doctor recommends to control by diet and exercise, I received the news by mail so I have not been given the diet yet. Under the circumstances it seems like a ceramic cooker would be bad because
you would probably want to eat more meat than you should.[p]Any thoughts or opinions on this.[p]Thanks

    Inquisitive,
How much grilled/smoked/baked food have you been eating?[p]How much fried/sauteed/canned/fast food have you been eating?[p]These 2 questions might lead you to your answer.

  • Bobby-Q,
Good point... add to the list, fruits & vegetables.[p]Banker John

    Inquisitive,
I've been on Liptor for years so my cholesterol has been in check. However back in mid November I was diagnosed with level 2 diabetes. Doc said I needed to go on a diet of 2000 calories a day, excercise and limit or delete most sweets. At first I thought it was the end of my egging or at least seriously curtailing it. Well, here it is 3 months later and I have lost 24 pounds (12% loss), but am still egging like I did before - both the types of food and the frequency. Actually I'm eating better and now have breakfast which is a necessity for the diabetes thing. I have learned moderation and it really hasn't been that tough. The reward has been there - feeling good about the weight, seeing that Doc took me off the need to test my blood sugar everyday and I'm still enjoying my BGEs. Lilly puts out an extensive booklet ranking the majority of the restaruant chains - fast food type - and trust me - just steering clear of those joints will do wonders for your cholesterol and weight. Good luck!

  • Inquisitive, actually the types of lean, less fatty cuts of meat you will need to be eating are some of the things best cooked on mr. Egg. Turkey, chicken, lean cuts of beef, fish, beans, and veggies... Your eating life is much improved when any of these visit Humpty Dumpty vs. the oven !!

Inquisitive,[p]I think it depends on who you ask these days. Some have great success following low carb diets eating enough meat to make any card carrying PETA member cringe. I've had great success with that type of diet. Also, I think almost everyone is now agreeing that the white carbs are some of the most evil foods out there.[p]The answer which I hate to give since I know I hate hearing it is that I don't believe there is really a diet "silver bullet." I think exercise and portion control are actually very important, and trust me, I shudder hearing that I have to do those two things! I was probably 90 pounds fatter 2 years ago, and lost it all and have been able to pretty much keep it off (knock on wood!) by pretty much eliminating things like white bread, junkie foods like potato chips and cookies and such, stopping getting take out and delivery all the time, and exercising more and more. I started with walking and have progressed to pretty steady running/jogging. Also, throughout, I've given myself a cheat day or two on weekends to eat/drink whatever I want (sadly, I've given up weekday drinking except on special occasions...).[p]I say go for the BGE. We can all use quality cookers regardless of the diets we follow![p]All of that said, since I'm off tomorrow, today is a cheat day for me. So, it's time for me to cook up some chili which I can ladle over some big chips later on this evening over a beer or 11![p]Happy Sunday!

    Inquisitive,
If your doctor is recommending that you control your cholesterol numbers through diet and exercise, then they probably aren't through the roof (yet). [p]See what the diet and exercise routines entail, then go from there. A healthy diet doesn't preclude cooking on an Egg. The healthy foods you cook on the Egg will likely taste better than the same food cooked by means other than grilling or smoking, encouraging you to stay within the guidelines. [p]In any case, a healthy diet is determined by what you eat, not by what you cook. The pulled pork from even the fattiest Boston butt need not be excessively fatty when served - just be a bit more careful when trimming the pork before cooking and when pulling the finished roast. (You might have to give up spareribs for the duration, though...)[p]Good luck,
    Bob

  • Inquisitive,[p]I've found (and research says) that it's the carbs in your diet combined with fat that has the greatest effect on cholesterol. I can vouch for that. After 6 months on the Atkins, my total Chol. numbers went from 210 to 172. My HDL to LDL ratio landed in the top 1% of the population. (the good end) My triglicerides went way down too. (protein and exercise up your good HDL) Again, it's the high glycemic carbs that are the culprits.[p]If you want to comprimise, eliminate all the white carbs. (white bread, pasta, potatoes, etc) but keep the good carbs. (green veggies and some carrots) Cut down on saturated fat, (pork and hamburger) and up your intake of fish, chicken, and soy.[p]The Zone diet is a good one.[p]BTW, I've found ostrich and buffalo to be excellent replacements for beef, especially in hamburgers. They're more tender, taste better, (especially cooked ceramic) and are VERY lean.

    tach18k,
1200 to 1500 geeez that sounds like cruel and unusal punishment - you sure you didn't see an undertaker instead of a doctor???
I started at 200# and he didn't really give me a target as I'm not that overweigh so I'm down to 176 now.

who said the egg is only for meat? had these green beans tonight with mushrooms, oecans and bleau cheese. mmm mm good.

  • Inquisitive,
My wife ordered a large egg for me for Father's Day last year. Before it arrived, she was diagnosed with gall bladder disease and told to eat as little fat as possible until surgery could be performed, in about 1 month. The egg arrived and we cooked chicken breasts, skinless chicken, superlean burgers, fresh corn (rubbed with chili powder, salt and honey), fish of all kinds, eggplant, etc. We even roasted bananas, apples and pears for dessert and served them with a little brown sugar and non-fat yogurt.[p]Granted, I was jonesing for my first pulled pork but I have to say that the egg made this culinary detour very enjoyable. A side benefit was the loss of 15 pounds each during that month![p]Now that my wife is gall bladderless, we have more alternatives, but still...a good salmon steak with a spicy rub or a roasted, smoked acorn squash still makes the grade.[p]Even with dietary restrictions, cooking on the egg is like driving a nice sports car. It will do what you ask and keeps you out of trouble if you pay a little bit of attention to where you want to go.[p]Paul

    New Bob,
honest to God truth...I loaned my MD my BGE VCR tape and he bought a large BGE the next day! If my HMO knew we were talking Q during visits they might cancel me!!! I even gave him a copy of Wise One's cookbook!
