Cypress work table

Unknown
edited November -0001 in EggHead Forum
I've just bought my "Egg" along with the cypress work table. Is it recommended to oil, stain, or treat the wood to protect against grease, spills, etc., or should it just be allowed to weather to its natural gray color? Thanks, Tommy

  • Tommy,
Cypress is a very porous wood and that means whatever it absorbs will likely be there for a very long time. However, it is great for outside use and is a favorite for tables, chairs and other maintenance-free projects. You will likely get a lot of suggestions from Eggheads but here's one product you can read about in the meantime. [p]Spring Chicken

    Tommy,
Congratulations and welcome! A new egg- your gonna have a lot of fun.[p]Cypress is a durable wood and good for outdoor use. It is disease and rot resistant but will look better and last longer if a protectant is applied. There are many products out there to use so it's a matter of personal choice. I'm going to give my personal idea but it's up to you and the needs you have for your BBQing.[p]I like linseed oil because it's a natural product that traditional woodworkers have used for a long time. There are modern formulas that aid in ease of application and performance in outdoor environments. You may want to visit a hardware or paint store and compare various products. General Finishes makes a penetrating linseed oil designed for outdoor applications. This is a finish that soaks into the wood and will give your cypress table a rich look. [p]A new egg and table- Yup, Life is good.
I hope I was of some help. Good luck,

  • Spring Chicken,[p]There are two products in the link. Do you recommend one or both? [p]Thanks,[p]Clausen

  • clausenk,
I would not hesitate to use either depending upon where I planned to put my table and if I wanted a color to make it stand out. You certainly want it to look nice among its surroundings. Heat, Cold, Rain, snow, sun, birds, polution, UV's and even chemicals in water all effect wood, no matter what you do to it. Protection just makes the process slower.[p]My suggestion would be to e-mail them and explain exactly what you intend to do with it and get their advice. You just may end up making Eggheads out of them.[p]Spring Chicken

  • Thanks to Clay Q and Spring Chicken for your help. We've already had some really (!!) good steaks.[p]Thanks again, Tommy
