  • Retired RailRoader,[p]WOOO HOOOOO. I almost as eggcited as you!!! I ordered mine on-line today!!![p]:O)[p]Joe
  • Aughhhhhhh!!!! My egg arrived safely but the Plate Setter was broken. I am getting a new plate setter from my dealer but that will not be until sometime next week. Here is my problem, I am all set to make ribs so how do I get an indirect heat without a place setter or should I just freeze them and make a chicken?

Retired Railroader with broken plate setter!!,[p]Did you get any means of elevating the cooking grid other than the platesetter? If you bought a grid extender or an extra grid (as I recall your list of eggcessories was quite long), you can still create an indirect cook. I'll let the more experienced BBQers chime in on whether or not this will work with ribs...[p]You can create an indirect by placing a drip pan with some liquid in it on the cooking grid, then placing the food above that on the extended grid. An aluminum foil disposable pan works great with food like ribs. If there needs to be ceramic mass, you might consider using the pizza stone on the grid extender in the inverted (hanging)position, with the drip pan hanging around down there, too. I'm not sure if the pizza stone fits. If the ceramic mass is not a requirement, then I think I would use the hanging extended grid with a drip pan (some nice liquid in it would be good--apple juice maybe) and cook the ribs on the main grid.[p]I think I have read that some here cook ribs direct. Not sure about that.[p]Hang in there while some others chime in. There is ALWAYS a way, and you will find it here on the forum.

    Retired RailRoader,
Look at the beautiful pics two posts down by jake42. Indirect cook by virtue of the drip pan between ribs and coals. No ceramic mass.[p]Have a good Sunday

    Retired RailRoader,
Sorry to hear about the plate setter but at least you will have Your Egg. Congratulations and remember about the flashback when doing your steaks.[p]Cheers,

    Retired Railroader,
Sorry, RR, I have to recant. The plate setter in those pics is very dark, but it's there. I'll defer to those who have tried direct rib cooks or at least cooks without the platesetter to better guide you.[p]Those ribs look very pretty though!

Retired Railroader with broken plate setter!!,
Shop around for fire brick - the ones I have are 4.5" x 9" x 1.25". They came in a box of 6 for $10 from Menard's. Using two butted together laying flat then stand one on edge on each side and then place an auxillary grate on top of that. Those brick are versatile toys for your toy box!

RRP,[p]I paid 90 cents a piece for mine and bought ten (big spender that I am), and they are great for grid extending, indirect cooking, etc.
  • Trouble,
I did not get the grill extender but I have made one using the information provided my the Naked Whiz and others. Could I use WessB's 3-1-1.5 using the normal grate to hold the pan with the apple juice while cooking the ribs on the home made grate extender? Also like Trouble mentioned if this is possible should I use the pizza stone for the ceramic mass?[p]While all this is going on I have been playing with the egg. I can not believe that a little Greenheat on the BGE lump once lit got the dome temp to 550 within 6 min. I had to preheat my Ducane gas grill for 15 min. just to get it to 450!!! Griil marks here I come.

RR, this is the last time I'll bother you...[p]There is a recipe in the Recipes section of this page, Under Pork, then Ribs. "Ribs a la JJ" or something like that. JJ's recipe is for a direct cook--read it over it might be just the ticket for you.[p]Have fun this weekend.

  • Trouble,
