Be careful of Himalayan salt blocks

That is a great response from the merchant.
I found this online: http://www.saltworks.us/himalayan-plates-bricks-blocks.html
and it talks about letting it heat at low for 15 minutes, then going to medium, etc.... when using an open flame. You mentioned you eased it up, I wonder if we just need to be really slow about these. Makes the use of them more of a pain though.
Glad you're safe. -
Thanks for the How-to-do on the Salt Block. I ordered a 16x8x2 block and will get it this Friday. I will follow your way of warming up the Salt Block.

Glad you're okay. What luck to have picked that moment to leave the area. Scary stuff.
I'm not familiar with salt blocks. What were you going to do with a heated salt block? -
Excellent customer service! After reading your post today I Googled to try to find any information regarding problems, etc. - I didn't find anything. Here's hoping the replacement arrives quickly and you have excellent results with it!!!

Gwen,
There have been several recent threads on using salt blocks. One of them especially caught my eye ... cooking scallops on them.
This was to be my first cook, and I thought I'd fry a couple of eggs on them. Obviously, I can't publish any results. :laugh:__________________________________________Dripping Springs, Texas.Just west of Austintatious -
Gosh! What a lucky break you stepped out of that kitchen
Glad you are OK
Will miss you in Salado :(
Think you and Pam will make any Texas EGG events this year?
Hope so -
I had the EXACT same thing happen to me this weekend. It also could NOT have been the way I heated it because this one was RIGHT OUT OF THE CELLOPHANE and I was also using another IDENTICAL one right beside it. Same fire, same heat, one was fine one blew like a bomb. Fragments everywhere sounded like a shotgun. This was the Himalayan salt block from William-Sonoma so BE CAREFUL. Or at least let someone you do not like "check" on it the first time it is being heated.....

Great... I bought 4 5x5 blocks and haven't used any of them yet...

Holy smokes! I had always wanted to try one of those salt blocks - now I am not so sure anymore!

This is a very old thread. I have learned a lot from it though. Number one be very careful when heating up a salt block, and number two there are a lot of members here with a very high post count that are no longer active.

I wonder if there was trapped moisture. Water when turning to steam expands 1600 times. Put that under pressure and you have a bomb.Large BGEBBQ Guru DigiQ IIMartensville, Saskatchewan Canada
