Coffee Beans for Smoke...Comments? Advice?

So I was over on the BBQ Brethren forum the other day and saw a posting about using coffee beans for smoke flavor. Crazy I thought! So I tried it and at first didn't like the smell (Burnt coffee), but somehow at got a bit better the longer they "roasted" on the lump. Thoughts? Advice? Comments?

    I have been using the left over coffee grounds from my morning jave for years when in a coffee flavor mood. After the grounds make the morning waker upper I place them in a small container with newspaper and place outside to dry, turning every few days or in the oven at 200f for overnight. After the moisture is gone I store them in an airtight container and when ready to use for smoke, place a 1/2 cup or so in an aluminum pouch with some holes and toss on the fire. Careful, if the grounds are not properly dried and they are placed in an airtight container they will mildew and need to be trashed. Also I use a coffee based rub that is eggcellent on beef and poultry.

    Hey Tim,

    That sounds interesting - I love coffee rubs. A few questions:

    Do you put the beans directly on the top of the coals just before cooking, mix them through like chunk or put them in tin foil?


    Do you use already roasted beans? I think at least one of our local coffee places will sell them unroasted.

    This will be fun to try.

    No matter what method you do,I would suggest you place them in an aluminum pouch so they do not fall between the charcoal and get lost at the bottom.

    So you guys are using cooked, leftover grounds?

    I just use the fresh stuff.. seen it used quite often on TV - always freshly ground, never brewed coffee.


    I love it - and use it often.
  • I poured them into hot coals early in the cook. I figured they would not last long. I really don't have any good pointers, as I just stumbled into the idea as well. If you try it, let me know how it goes and your impressions. I thought it sounded fun too.

    So your using the leftover brewed beans/grounds as something for smoke, like any wood would be used?


    Or are you doing this, AND adding it to the food your preparing? I've been using it as a course rub.
