Swedish meatballs with mushroom gravy

This evenings dinner.
Meatballs made from ground sirloin with mashed potato, diced onion, cardamom, salt and pepper and a little canola oil to add richness with this lean meat.
Got the egg going(with the help Mickey's Malt Liqueur), 375 degrees dome, indirect. A little pecan wood smoke and set the pan in. Regular white mushrooms added at the half way point, now things are lookin happy.
Brought the pan into the kitchen to make gravy when the meatballs were done. For the gravy I removed the meat to a separate container then worked the pan with the drippings by adding potato starch mixed with cold milk and water. Also adjusted taste with Penzeys Fox Point Seasoning, more cardamom and salt. I let it simmer to reduce for about 10 minutes and dinner was ready.
Rutabaga, steamed then buttered with salt and pepper for a side- this was awesome, sweet and tender with great flavor.
Truth be told, I love mushrooms. Dinner was soooo gooood and comforting. It's the Viking in me.
Storm is pounding outside, high winds and expecting 11" overnight. No problem, I'm fat and happy at home with my eggs.
Cheers!

A great entry to follow my soup course!
Keep warm and dry -
Thanks Beli,
Yeah, rutabaga when it's good it is a treat and this one was great. Delicious flavor, sweet and tender. Have you tried parsnips? Another root vegetable that's under rated but soooo gooood. Made a pork stir fry in the wok with parsnips yesterday. Terrific! -
:P
Now the weather girl says 12" of snow by tomorrow.
Hummmmm, what can I cook tomorrow if I stay home??? -
The meatballs have mashed potato in them?
Is that used as a thickening(?spell) agent?Salado TX & 30A FL: Egg Family: 3 Large and a very well used Mini, added a Mini Max when they came out (I'm good for now). -
Hey thanks! Yes, soup first. Just thinking....You gave me an idea to make soup tomorrow. 12" of white stuff on its way down and soup would hit the spot after watching Diana Q shovel out the driveway.
-
thanks for the idea.... i have not made swedish meatballs in a loooong time.... i can not get to my egg.... we had an ice storm here in( pa)... the likes of which i have never seen before.... it looks like it will be a few more weeks till i dig out my egg from the icy crust!....( i might have to go conventional/// stove.... yikes!).... lol...rr

Mashed (whipped) potatoes in ground sirloin or chuck is Diana Q's secret to super tender and moist hamburgers. I guess it's not a secret anymore. :P
More often it's cracker crumbs, saltine crackers smashed with a rolling pin until very fine then mixed in the meat with a little milk. I think Diana's potato idea is better. I'm hooked. -
Holy smokes Ranger Ray, you gota do somethin to rescue your egg. "POP"....an idea just popped into me wee noggan. :silly: Get a 100 watt light bulb down the top vent using a work light. Stuff a rag over the top vent to trap the heat and your egg will melt the ice off in a day. I think.
Good luck! -
Oh yes turnips in white sauce mmmmm remember having them often in my student days abroad.
-
Looks very yummy! Nice.

Looks wonderful Clay.

Comfort food and, I guess for me, soul food.
Thanks. Was a fun cook on the egg, just loved the fire with snow coming down. And it will be coming down all night, 12" by morning. -

Mushrooms added a lot of flavor to this gravy. So did the cardamom spice.

Clay,
I knew you were a Vikings fan at heart.
Dish looks delish!
Just took care of the drifting on the roof, just waiting on the plow so I can finish my snow removal duties. Have fun with yours. :P -
looks awesome! i'll have a plate!
-
Clay, those are the best Swedish meatballs I've seen.
My brother's girlfriend's mother is from Sweden, but her meatballs don't look as good as yours.
Hope you're hunkered down in this recent storm my friend.
