Greetings, My good wife gave me a BGE for Christmas, and we have definitely enjoyed it. Fantastic food. Now that it is in the teens out side, are does anyone have any dos or don’ts about lighting and using the BGE in very cold temperatures? Should I let it come up to temperature more slowly? I have read a couple of posts about cracking things. Is this a danger?

  • ThrRoff,[p]I've never worried about the egg being too cold - just me. No need to do anything special - cook/smoke as usual. However, there is the very rare occasion when the top will freeze shut - just drop a piece of burning newspaper in the top and problem solved.[p]OctoberGlory

  • ThrRoff, weather will not bother it. There are lots of Canadian Eggers cooking in extreme cold. The firebox will eventually crack but that is not due to weather, and the egg works just fine with a cracked firebox anyway. Enjoy the egg. You married well !!

ThrRoff,[p]Welcome! Nope, cold weather never botherd my egg. Even at -9 below. I admit though, that I bring the egg up to temp slowly. But then, there is no reason to rush things when it's -9. Your gonna have a lot of fun![p]Clay Q

    ThrRoff,
I was one of the cracked things posters. My grid cracking seems as if it had nothing to do with outside temp, just differences in the grid temp.[p]I've never known of any problems from the Eggs cracking in the cold, I think they love the cold actually.

  • ThrRoff,
    There was snow here yesterday.

    Hi Dave,
Eric is my 10 year old. The kids wanted to practice their burger recipies. I got a little grill for 12 bucks and put it in the fireplace for them. If I only had a mini green egg....[p]

  • db,[p]I kinda figured that the post came from your family. You tell Eric that he is doing a great job as the grid marks on both the burgers and dogs look great. You had better get him in a Kids-Q this year as I think he is ready. Better yet, get him started in chicken so he can help you! [p]Good luck this year and I hope to see you out there somewhere on the curcuit. [p]Dave
