pizza stones breaking

Always Smokin
Posts: 111
over a years time I made pizza at least 15 times.
I have gone through about 5 or 6 pizza stones. They keep breaking from the extreme change of heat. any one got an idea on how to cure the problem.
I have a med so some thicker stones I have seen are to large in diameter to put on the med. Recently I have bought the stones at Target because they are $10.00 so it aint so bad if they bust. Got any ideas??

Are you breaking the BGE brand stones?
Try a pottery supply store for kiln shelves. Pizza stone is one of the few things I haven't managed to break even after this tumble -
the BGE ones are the only ones that seem to take ited egli avea del cul fatto trombetta -Dante

  Hey I bought some gator slim jims on the way back from Orlando today,,haven't tried them yet but I'll let you know how they are.

I have a large egg and I have the big green egg baking stone. Two years and it ain't busted yet. I did try a pampered chef stone and it shattered in my egg while it was coming to temp. About a year ago I got the adjustable rig and spider...I got their baking stone as well and use it often. My opinion get the big green egg one or the one from the ceramic grill store. 5 or 6 pizza stones and you already spent enough for a bge stone and they carry a year warranty.

Oh no do you know what part of the Gator they come from? The slim part should be a tip!!

I picked one up at Wallmart which was about 1" thick which works good. I also use a kiln shelf once in a while. The kiln shelf will withstand 2,400°, they are just over 1/2" thick.

I have a 10 year old Pampered Chef stone and a BGE stone. We use them 1-2 times a month for the past three years on our Eggs and have never had them break.
Don't know if we are lucky or what. We preheat them with the plate setter, maybe that helps.Knoxville, TN

You have just been lucky on the P chef Chris.... I will not even use mine indirect up high in the dome. the newer ones from them can hardly take the oven anymore. had a new one, less than a year, shatter on me in the stove at 375.. my sis in law is a dealer and they are seeing higher breakage for some reason.

Yeah, I've blown up a couple of PC stones, much to my wife's chagrin. I think it's a matter of where you put them. If you put them high in the dome, you may be okay. OTOH, if you plop them down in a spider to act as an indirect barrier for a large cook...well, you get a chagrinned wifey. :(

There have been a lot of broken Pampered chef stones reported on this forum.
It's recommended you get your egg started, then heat your stone & plate setter up with the egg. That way there won't be any extreme heat changes. I have one from the ceramic grill store www.ceramicgrillstore.com and one from Primo. They both work great, no problems.
