Put these 3 racks of ribs on yesterday afternoon around 1:00 pm for a relaxing family dinner. [p]
[p]Check them around 5:00ish and it was time for the taste test. Tasted great and then checked the neighbor's yard. The plumber was over cleaning the stopped-up drain. Same plumber that plumbed my house last summer. Keeping the trades happy, I called him over for a few ribs. The neighbor came over, and knowing his current hassle, mellowed him with ribs. Then, the wife, her quilting friend, and my daughter came out of the house looking for ribs. Next thing I know, dinner was down to two small half racks.........[p]
[p]Well ribs were great and dinner ended up being soup and remainder of ribs. How many times have you had dinner never get to the table, more or less in the house?[p]I love it when a plan comes together: great ribs and friends!

Sandbagger,
You are a gentleman and a fine cook. Great things happen around the BBQ and your an example of what the egg is all about. Good times and good food with family and friends. [p]By the way, did the plumber comment on your grid extender system? I like it.[p]Clay Q

Steve-B, the ribs are Costco's three pack babybacks. I wondered about the thickness too, as the other end was not as thick. I don't know what makes a good slab: varying meet thickness vs. even meat over the entire slab. I was concerned about cooking times, but all were great. As for the rib color, who knows. I turned the camera on, pointed, focused and hit the button. I did have to trim the picture before posting.[p]The grid extender is something I've been working on, so I can do more ribs and such on my medium egg. I made it out of 304 stainless steel 150# threaded pipe. It is adjustable and swivels out of the way, so I can get to the bottom rack. It is simple to make: pipe wrenches and two welds: The drip pan is a pizza pan and went in between pictures. Forgot it intially. [p]Clay Q: I did not show the plumber the grid extender as he was on the neighbor's clock. There is always next time.

Sandbagger,
That's the spirit! I give away way more barbecue that I actually eat. Of the six slabs of baby backs I recently did, I ate 5 bones over two days. The slabs that weren't consumed that night went home with friends. Two butts is no more difficult than one, so I'll usually do two and send one to the neighbors. I guess it's only fair because they have to smell my cooking all the time.

Sandbagger,
What kind of welder are using, small home welder or????[p]Thanks,
New Bob

New Bob, I'll take a picture and send to you. All you need to weld is the 7/16 washer/nut on the 3/8 inch tee, two times. The key is not to have the weld melt during cooking, soldering and brazing could melt.
-
sandbagger,[p]I think brazing is safe, as long as you don't get temps over 1000 degrees. Metal is usually heated to over 1100 degrees to braze it. Should be safe for most cooking.
-
Oops... forgot to mention that brazing can be done with your handy MAPP torch.

Yazoo, Here is the grate swung out. If you turn it around, back to front, it will swing totally out. It can sit on the placesetter or on the fire ring. I guess, but have not tried where you could hold multiple grates, one below and one above the egg's rim. Spacing between grates needs to be at least two inches. This is done on a medium but should work on a large, just need to play with it a bit. [p]
