Lump Storage

quickdraw
Posts: 15
Does anyone have a container they use / like to store lump? I have my bag of lump on a screened in porch. I want something to prevent it from getting damp / make it easy to select pieces by size.
Any suggestions? Am I worrying about a non-issue?
Thanks,
QD

I just keep mine in the bag in my garage. Well, a pallet stacked with bags actually.
If I had to store some in a damp environment, I'd probably get one of those lidded Rubbermaid containers. Wouldn't help with sorting, but I don't do that anyway.
Do a Google search for charcoal container. They make 'em with pour spouts. Still no help with sorting though.I hate it when I go to the kitchen for food and all I find are ingredients!

I have a plastic bin that sits on my deck to protect the lump from rain and snow and it works fine.

I bought a charcoal briquette container at Lowes in their BBQ department. It holds 10 pounds of lump and keeps it dry on my deck. The unopened bags are just stored in my garage. I actually have 2 of those containers - one for Royal Oak and 1 for Wicked Good.
These containers have an easy open lid for pouring the lump into the BGE.Large BGE

I used to use the rubbermaid type of box with a lid. However, I've now just gotten used to keeping bags in the garage. I'm pretty lazy...

never found a need to sort lump, have had the bag rot of the lump in my damp/wet cellar, have actually found roots growing in it  takes longer to light with wet lumpfukahwee maineyou can lead a fish to water but you can not make him drink it

As a personal preference, I like to sort the lump for long cooks, so I use a rubbermaid container that is low and long/wide so that I don't have to dig too much through it. Unopened bags do well in the garage.

Lowe's about $10 each.

I'm with Richard FL - two of those containers - one for large pieces and one for the rest. Weather proof so far.

I got a 21 by 43 inch plastic storage bin at Lowes. Holds all the egg stuff, plus chunks/chips and a 10 lb. bag of lump. I don't sort either. Think it was around $20.00. If you are going to store only lump then my guess this would store 3 or 4 10lb. bags.

I just keep it in bags in a cabinet. Back in the pre Egg days I kept my briquettes in a war surplus ammo box. I still have some in there I think.

Open bags in the Dining room (where it's nearest the egg and the stock of bags in my garage where it's cool and dry. I was going to buy a Rubbermaid container, then I thought "Why do I want a charcoal dust filled piece of plastic when these bags are so well made and easy to move about?"....

I "third" Richard's recommendation. Just don't be leaning over when you dump the coal in unless you want a face full of coal dust :pinch:Knoxville, TN

My lump stays in my garage for storage until I need a new bag. I always have an open bag on my table. Not on the top, but on the lower level. Sometimes the table is covered, sometimes it is not. I leave the cover off out of habit after I cook. Usually the next day or two I put the cover back on. The cover is horrible though as it's old and cracked. Sometimes the lump has got water on it, but the paper bag does a good job of keeping it out.
I've never sorted it. I only dump it in the EGG. I thought about the storage containers, but I really don't have a "great" spot on my deck. My deck is very large, but I don't want containers just laying around. The bins won't fit on the table or under it either and the table fits in the nook without room on either side. So bags work for me. Never have an issue with my lump. -
Ain't nuthin' bettter! have two that stay out on the deck year round.

Lowe's and Home Depot have plenty of Rubber Maid size tubs. I have found them to be fairly water tight.
-
I have a quite large rubber-maid type binin my garage - large enough to hold two 22 pound bags at a time. The bin seals well enough (so far, havent't had in the heat & humidity of summer here) to keep the water out.
As I work my way through the load of lump, I like to pull the larger stuff for the bottom of the fire and the rest gets dumped on top of that. I just load up a medium sized cardboard box with the smaller stuff and then a couple or three large peices. Take the box to the egg, place the large pieces then dump the rest.
