Smokin in Hiawassee,[p]no difference that i know of other than prime rib is cut into ribeye steaks and the different cooking techniques. prime rib is cooked(for lack of a better word) and a steak is grilled.[p]Scott

Well prime is a grade of meat. So a rib roast that happens to be prime is called prime rib. Of course it is such a common term that no one seems to notice the difference anymore.[p]Rib roasts are cooked as a whole piece of meat so that the outside forms a crust but a majority of the meat is slow roasted in the oven (or on the egg). A ribeye steak is cut from the rib roast and then it is grilled over high heat with much more surface area forming a crust or char.[p]HTH a little

Smokin in Hiawassee, the Ribeye and the Prime Rib are the same muscle and same piece of meat with a slight difference...the Ribeye is boneless and the Prime Rib is bone-in. However, the primal cut of rib has seven bones and the steaks from the Chuck end (more fat & 3 different muscles) of the rib will look and taste different than a steak from the Loin end (less fat) of the rib.[p]As far as the term Prime Rib, technically, a Prime Rib must come from a USDA Prime graded rib. However, for years, in most supermarkets and butcher shops, the first three or four ribs of a Choice grade whole rib were considered the 'prime' of the rib. Hence the term "Prime Rib Roast".[p]

I might add that all the above terms are used loosely, mixed & matched, misunderstood, misused, etc, etc, etc, depending on the regional preferences of where you live.
