Chicken Direct on Vertical Roasters/How to???? Time?Temp?

Unknown
edited November -0001 in EggHead Forum
This will be my first time using vertical roasters and I do not have a plate setter. I will have to cook direct so your thoughts as to time and temperture will be most appreciated. Heading out now to buy chicken. Thanks, in advance, for the magical advise! Oh yeah. cooking two chickens if that helps in the time and temperture calculations.

  • Hall,
There are a lot of ideas in this forum on how to cook a chicken. You will be fine cooking direct. Keep the temp about 300 and they should be done in less than two hours. [p]Jerry

  • Jwirlwind, thanks for the reply. There are a number of ideas but dang few that don't include a plate setter or some other device.

<p />Hall,[p]I do beer butt chickens all the time. Pretty much the same as a vertical but only a beer can in it's place.[p]You can easily go indirect without a plate setter. Anything to deflect the heat works well. I have usd HD foil many times as a deflector. Do you have a throw away aluminum pan? That works really well also.[p]The photo shows indirect using HD foil and a raised grid.[p]Hope that helps.[p]Mick

I use a metal pie pan covered with aluminum foil. Put the vertical roaster in the pan (consider it a drip pan) and voila, you will be cooking over indirect heat. I use a dry rub on the bird. Cook at 350 for about an hour to an hour and a half or until you have an internal temp of 165 - 170. Great way to cook chicken.
