mini egg or small?

I have 2 smalls with my medium and large, but no mini. I'd say the small is more versatile than the mini. The mini is supposed to be the ultra steak searing machine, but the small is more like a small Egg. If you think you could travel with 60 pounds of small Egg, I'd go for it unless you crave the searing abilities of the mini. One thing I like to do which requires a small is to be cooking the big piece of meat in the large, and doing some sort of vegetable pie or tart in the small. So, it depends really on how much weight you can travel with and what you want to cook on it. Good luck![p]TNW

We have a mini and a large. As TNW said, the biggest drawback to the mini is the limited amount of grill area, as well as the height of the grill above the coals. Indirect cooking is basically out - at least I haven't figured out how to do it yet. The payoff is light weight and compact size.[p]While Eggbert the mini does mostly high-temp grillwork, I've also rolled babybacks to do low and slow.[p]I'm glad we added Eggbert to our family.[p]Ken

coleman,the small is much more versatile than the mini. It weighs 70 with a 13 inch grid vs. the mini at 30 pounds and a 9 inch grid. So, really both are portable.I seldom use the mini but the small gets a lot of use around my house..indirect, steaks, sides, a great cooker. Draw out a 13 and a 9 inch oval so you can see how much difference there is between the two...hth

I have both a mini and a small...I agree with the Whiz...if the weight isn`t a problem, go with the small. I actually use the small egg the most out of all of my eggs. It can do so many more things than the mini, and you can see some set ups in the "tips" section of my website for the small egg....this opinion is based on the fact that you arent getting BOTH the small AND the mini..LOL[p]Wess

Another vote for the small as long as you don't mind the extra weight. It can sear anything, I have even finished low and slow pork shoulders for up to 6 hrs in the small when I needed the large tp cook some other food.

coleman,[p]At our house the large arrived first, then the small, and then the mini. Our experience has been that we use the small and mini quite often (normally 3 mouths to feed). Both sizes provide a bunch of utility, and the mini can do an indirect cook. All one has to do is get another grid, a couple of 8" ceramic stones (they are typically about 1/4" thick) and 3 kiln posts. Granted the mini can only do a relatively small quantity of food (though YB has figured it out with wings), but indirect cooks are quite doable.[p]Puj
