Rain Proofing the Stoker

I pretty much decided on getting the stoker after the 100th adjustment on a cook that I could not get to stabilize at 275F.

I see most people are putting the stoker control unit in a tupperware box. What are you guys doing to protect the fan from the rain? I was thinking of something like this:

remove the lid and put it down ward for air flow. Then cut a hole for the fan. Does the fan get heated up enough by the cooker to be of concern to the plastic?

You have the right idea but my thinking it's too big of a container.

There are some great ideas using 'tubs' for protecting the guru/stoker. I didn't bookmark those posts hopefully some of those folks will re-post.

The bracket for the blower (on both the guru and stoker) will get hot mainly due to the heat in the ceramics of the egg. With lower temperature cooks once the egg has been burning for a while, hot enough to where you want to be wearing some light gloves if you need to touch it.

I use bread bags and wire to seal the bread bag or use a large zip lock bag and fold the excess under the controller so the water wont seep back into the electronics. I don't worry about the blower. There was a post a little further down that was talking about the blower freezing shut - I am guessing it was the actual fan that froze.

  • Hi,

Here is what I do because it keeps me dry too. Though with bit wind it is less than perfect..

and the box...(the gasket is a shower drain with 2" Pvc 90degree to keep water from splashing in.

I did a search of posts because I could swear I saw a pic of this. Here is what I found...

  • I have the pretty much the same setup (Tupperware container with the pipe running through it) as you do. As far as the fan, I used a 16oz plastic cup and cut the bottom out and a 1 inch notch (run it about 2 inches down the cup) at the top (so the fan glides into the notch) and it bumps up to the Egg perfectly. The fan is well protected now from rain.

This setup is perfect for the Stoker and I have used it several times in bad weather.

I like that can shield! Thanks for posting that. Sure looks classier than the aluminum foil shield that I put over my Stoker fan. In my case the rain was light. Anything heavier and I'd have it under a pop up shelter.

  • I cut the bottom third off of a 2 liter coke bottle, made a notch in it and just slide it over the stoker fan unit. Has worked fine so far.
