Temp Problem

I have had my Egg for about 5 years and I thought I pretty much figured everything out but along came a new one...the last two times I have cooked my thermometer reading seemed to be reading low to me...I opened the lid and happened to catch a peek at the coals and they were burning red...I knew the temp was significantly higher than the 200 reading...out of pure fluke I happened to spin the grill grate and all of the sudden the thermometer started recognizing the higher temp.

Ok - so the obvious would be - time to change my thermometer...just curious if anyone else has had this problem.

Look at the thermometer stem and if it is coated with food stuff or soot (creosote) take a scotch brite type pad and clean it off.

Then check the calibration in boiling water and adjust if needed. It is possible the thermometer may read correct at one temperature but at another temperature be off.

There is always the option of buying a new thermometer and not worrying abou the old.
