BGE Charcoal starter"

Unknown
edited November -0001 in EggHead Forum
I have been told that there is a BGE electric charcoal starter that is used by sliding in or placing it within the stainless steel vent under the grate, and that it heats the grate which then ignites the charcoal above the grate. I have been unable to find this either from local dealer or on line. Any suggestions regarding where to find, and any comments on how effective it is in lighting the coals?

    Bob Sachs,
You've been misinformed. Electric charcoal starters are placed on or into the pile of charcoal to work their magic. I don't have one of these, but there are folks that swear by them, along with folks that swear at them. [p]I use Weber fire starting cubes, BGE fire starting blocks, or Rutland fire starting blocks, which are the same as the BGE-branded product.[p]My belief is that you want to start the fire from the top for most BGE pursuits, not from the bottom.[p]Good luck,
    Bob

  • Bob Sachs,
I have seen electric charcoal starters in several different stores but none like you mention, just be sure not to leave it unattended. About 7 to 10 minutes is all it taked to get the lump started.

  • Bob Sachs,[p]I have used the starter blocks, gel, map gas torch, but I must say that the electric starter is the way to go. Kind of a pain to stretch an extension cord, but in ~8 minutes it is on fireeeeeeeee.....[p]ciao[p]
  • Bob Sachs,[p]I have one it works great, just dont leave the fire for too long its raging in 7 mins ! as others have said you place it in the lump pile its about $15.00, i got mine from a local egg dealer in NJ

  • Bob Sachs,
I have one as well and they work great. I got a generic one at Home Depot for < $10. Had to modify (bend) it to fit, but, it works.
