Other names for Tri Tip?

Morning all,
Talked to my butcher yesterday, and he had not heard of a Tri Tip. What are some other names for this cut of meat, or, how can I accurately describe to him what I am after?
Thanks,
Roger

dry tip.....if cooked too long. Just joking

Santa Maria steak also. It is under the sirloin on the back side of the cow. It is usually ground into hamburger meat. 2 -3 llbs of muscle, or so Google says so.

I believe that it can also be called a Sirloin Tip Roast.

According to the North American Meat Processors Association (NAMP) tri-tip is designated as 185D. If you give a butcher this description he/she will know what it is, that is assuming they are a real butcher.

I don't think you will have any luck with your butcher. I ran into that problem with a local butcher and he could never figure it out. Do you have a Sams or Costco close by? Ask them to bring some in for you. They will have to buy a case so you might need to buy a bag of tri-Tips. It comes 6 or 8 bags to a case and about 6 to 8 in a bag. Trader Joes sells them seasoned and plain. Good luck to all.

My son called it "Good".

Thanks for the info guys. Next time I am at the butchers I will be able to tell him exactly what I want.

Good luck, Roger. I don't see them too often around us. I generally shop for meat at Caputos, and probably only see Tri-tip about 25% of the time, or less.
