Woosday..Day in Gruene, Texas

Spent the afternoon in Gruene. Here are some shots...Gruene Hall (oldest dancehall in Texas). I think that's Bret Favre in the right foreground. Some shots of the Guadalupe River about 100 yards from town. I almost lost my son, Ryan in these rapids when he was about 12 years old. He got bucked out right where the big guy is disappearing. He grabbed his tube and it drug him face first over the rocks for about 50 yards. He was pretty banged up.
The flowers are on Cenizo, aka, the barometer bush. They usually come into full bloom anywhere from 24 to 36 hours before a rain. That was yeaserday. I woke this morning to heavy rainfall, and we are predicted to get anywhere from 2 to 5 inches.

That water looks a lot wetter than it used to. Sure is purdy though. So's them bushes.

I suspect it's even wet on top of the water today.

Spent the weekend at Hamburg State Park, a nice little place about 120 miles from home with only 30 sites. We had a nice lakeside spot with plenty of shade and an eastern exposure. The weather was in the low to mid 80s all weekend, with morning lows in the 50s. There was a nice breeze blowing to keep the bugs and humidity down. Maybe the best part of the weekend is that I had no cell service or internet. It felt great to disconnect for three days.
Set my hammock up about 2' from the water's edge. Me, my daughters, and my wiener dog had quite a few naps laid up in it.
Caught more than a handful of nice little channel cats. I was planning to take my belly boat out but the ranger told me the lake was full of gators and snappers so I took the easy way out. Here is a nice shot of the mist rising off the lake early one morning.
I also caught a huge alligator snapper on chicken liver, it was at least 24" from snout to tail. The pics are on the wife's camera so maybe I can post some tomorrow.
Great little spot and we would love to return, but the ranger told me as we were leaving that they just found out this weekend that the park was going to be closed as part of State budget cuts. -
Great looking afternoon LR. I forgot it was Woosday already and don't have any thing to contribute. :(

Looks like your day in Gruene was a lot of fun, Mike. Those rapids look like a blast, too.
Nice bug and flowers shot. :~)
We're having an amazing year for butterflies. Here are just a few from the last couple days.
Red Spotted Purple drinking morning dew.
Monarch
Gray Hairstreak with a Skipper
Buckeye butterfly sharing the sedum.
Praying Mantis chowing down on a Spicebush Swallowtail.
And this very cool Ailanthus Webworm Moth supping on the sedum.
Happy WoosDay!

You're a fan of clouds, too. :~) Here's a recent sunset.

Looks like a great weekend Fidel and a great little park. I hate it when they close public lands and blame it on the budget! All it is is mismanagement of funds and they are going to hold the public lands hostage till someone pays the ransom. Politicians shouldn't be allowed to use property of the Public Trust as bargaining chips in their corruption. Just my 2¢.

How do you get those guys to pose for you? :(
-
yum, i can taste them from here .. .thanks john!!
-
nice pics!! ...you ever wonder how people can go tubing all day long, drink lots of beer in the process, yet never have to get out of the tube for pee break??!! hmmmm, makes you kinda wonder don't it??
-
Beautiful. That's some serious tubing!

Patience and persistence. :~) Most of the bug pictures come out blurred or out of focus or the bugs are moving so fast, by the time the shutter has released, there's no bug in the photo.
A couple things that help me photograph bugs. They might seem obvious but they do help.... move very slowly toward the subject with no fast or jerky movements that might scare off the bug.
Don't let your shadow pass over the bug as that will surely spook it off.
Make sure the camera is on macro and extend your camera nearly arm length so your body mass isn't hovering over the bug.
But most of all.... Take a couple hundred photos to get a few good ones.

Love the pictures on the river. I've tubed and canoed it many times. Use to go to a place in New Braunfels called Stinky Falls (named from sulfur) before they turned it into the Chute. High School memories.LBGE Katy (Houston) TX

Really is a beautiful river.

Looks like a fun day.
Is Granzin's still in the neighborhood?? I heard they moved. In the old days the best parking was at the laundry-mat next to the store. Their hot links are wonderful.Happy Trails~thirdeye~Barbecue is not rocket surgery
