How I got my Big Green Egg

I have been admiring BGEs for a long time, and on a trip to Austin to visit my Dad, I took him over to BBQ Galore to see what a BGE actually was. To our surprise they had an EGG cooking right in front of the store. Needless to say, we were both highly impressed!
I told Dad, we (my wife and me) had started saving up to buy one, and I was going to build a table for it. About a month later, Dad showed up at our house with an EGG and a workbench he bought at Goodwill.
We had the best Father/Son day putting the EGG together, visiting, enjoying some good Scotch, and adapting and re-working the workbench into a BGE cooking table. It was a very happy time.
Here a few photos our finished BGE table.

Awesome story -- and a beautiful table. I'll let others with more experience with tables confirm this, but my understanding is that you are going to want a stone paver and some feet under that Egg to protect your beautiful table.

Table looks nice. Now I suggest that you get yourself a paver block and put it under the egg before it burns through the wood.
At the very least put the ceramic feet under it. -
You may want to put something between the egg and your wooden riser. It will get hot and burn through the wood.
Grats on the egg! Have fun! -
lol
Looks like I was to slow to post about the pavers between the egg and table. I should have typed faster. -
Ah, I didn't think about that! Thanks for letting me know. I'll get that fixed today...or should I just use three feet I got with it and skip the paver?

Again, I don't even have a table, so others should confirm, but my understanding is that the feet are the bare minimum you should use. A stone paver (just a few bucks at Home Depot) is preferable, a paver + feet is best.
Enjoy.

what a great special story and what great memories you started with for your new egg. you will find that it will add many more as food is the center of most things in our lives during both good and bad times we still have to eat. Thanks for sharing and I bet your dad will have one of his own before long LOL

Great story & yes to paver stone & the 3 BGE feet....and welcome...you will have tons of fun.

I had mine setting on cedar 2 X 4's for years with only the feet. The reason was the spaces between the boards giving it plenty of ventilation. To my way of thinking, a paver stone greatly reduces the ventilation.
When I disassembled my table there was not a single burn mark on the boards. I would just use the feet and not worry about the base getting hot. It probably get much hotter up around the rim.
Congratulations. You and your Dad sound like fun folks.
Hope to see you at the next Texas Eggfest.

Great story and just out of curiosity do you think that your dad may be looking to adopt a, oh I don't know...maybe a slightly overweight forty-nine old son in the next month or two?
You know, we could be like step brothers and practice karate in the garage and stuff; just don't EVER touch my drums... -
Erich welcome to the gang, the Texas contingent is pretty awesome......hope to see you at the next Texas fest
-
Nice set up Erich!
Now you be careful about those fellow Teaxs Eggers..... -
Welcome! What ya gonna cook for dad?
-
Great story and nice job.

That is AWESME! PLEASE be sure to put pavers or fire bricks between the bottom of the egg and your table.
-
That is a great Dad and son story. It also goes to show you just never know what you will find at the Goodwill!Happily egging on my original large BGE since 1996... now the owner of 5 eggs. Call me crazy, everyone else does!
3 Large, 1 Small, 1 well-used Mini -
Erich, Great story. What have you cooked so far on your egg? Tim
BTW I vote paver or fire brick and the three green feet one in the back under the hinge and divide the other two. -
What a story. Thank you for telling us.
Keep watching for updates on the Plano EggFest. You will want to make that.Salado TX & 30A FL: Egg Family: 3 Large and a very well used Mini, added a Mini Max when they came out (I'm good for now). Plus a couple Pit Boss Pellet Smokers. -
Great re-fab on the table. Very nice story about your Dad. I wish I could have shared some Egging with Dad. He would have sh*t at the sticker price but I would have had him after a couple of meals
-
you might want to get some air under that Egg so that good looking table does not burn
-
Glad you finally got your egg and you and your dad did a great job on the table modifications. You will enjoy your new found obsession for many years.Larry

Nice table! And great story! Enjoy the Egg!

Great story, and that's an awesome looking table. That's really cool that you were able to turn a workbench from Goodwill into an egg table.
Have fun!
