how to cut a firebrick

Guys,
anyone know where i can get firebricks cut in MD area? i'd like to make them certain heigths so i can add another grid level with bottom half of egg if that makes sense. I can go to home depot and buy a $30 diamond tipped skill saw blade and cut it myself but i think someone would cut these bricks for a small fee?

Ace Hardware online has them and they will ship for free to your nearest Ace and you pick them up. I cut mine with a recpricating (sp?) saw...

I used a diamond blade on a side grinder...don't remember what I paid for it...but I gaurantee ya it wasn't $30....this only matters if you already own a side grinder..

You can do it with a hammer and chisel.

draw the lines as you want them cut, pound the chisel along those lines, (both sides) and it will break along that line. If you use 3 bricks to raise your setup vs. 4. It won't matter if they are perfect heights.

Orrr, you could search out someone doing tile work in your area and ask them to run it through the saw. Also landscapers will typically have a cutter of some type that will get through it.

An angle grinder will also work and those blades are about half the price.

the soft fire bricks can be cut with an old saw, the hard firebicks can be cut with a brick chisel but you will have a few that dont cut clean. these were done from a full sized fire brick with a chisel, would be easier to split if they were firebrick splits

didnt mean to post under your post, but that saw would make it easier to score the brick and then hit it with the brick chisel for a cleaner break

zackly. they cut bricks before they had diamond tipped saws.

I've got a sawzall. How did that work out when cutting the brick? I'd like to cut a full brick 3 3/8" for a grid to fit just below the top of bottom dome.... confusing huh. :woohoo: never thought of using recip. saw...thanks.

Forgot to mention that you should use a masonry or 'hardened' chisel. :P and safety glasses

yeah, i definately want a clean cut to lay flat. The bricks will sit on the CI grid at normal height then i want the stock grid just below the top of bottom part of egg. That way when i'm cleaning it the grid will be held in place by the egg, and not site above and topple bricks over... I've got an AR and figure for my cooking this might be an easier method of raising grid...

I have taken the bricks to a tile store that has a wet tile cutter. Usually there is no charge.

My box came with 6 bricks..I left 3 whole and cut 3...I scored them first & then cut with recripricating slow on slow speed..they all come out clean....

the ones i have in the link done with a masonry brick chisel sit flat, the cut is on the verticle side

They do make a blade for the sawzall that is carbide grit for such purposes.

I checked the yellow pages and found a large masonry contractor not far from here that cut 4 splits for me at no charge. They did it while I waited and the supervisor at the shop was very nice and into grilling too. Nice clean straight cuts.

There is place real close to you that should have them. Its on 170 just north of 100 on the left. Called rocks or something like that. CHeck them out.

Thanks, i think you are referring to Stone Store. That is where i bought the bricks from, but they will not /do not cut them. I asked. I tried Maisel Bros they don't cut them either...

Yes the stone store. I didn't realize that you already had them. I misread you OP. I would think that any place that does tile work would cut them for you. Or find a friend that has a tile cutter.

I used a chop saw, such as you would use to cut steel. A welder or a brick mason would have one, if you know of any shops nearby that do that kind of work.

Haven't read all other replies but you can take them to someplace that sells and installs tiles. Get them cut them on a tilesaw. I'm sure someone already suggested a grinder.
