Only got down to 0 F. Balmy compared to last year. The shoulder clod was amazing. It cooked at 280-300 all night new years eve while we slept. No thermometer, but the 24 pound clod went on at 9 or 10pm, I wrapped in foil when I woke up at 9am. Had real nice bark. Cooked until we needed the egg to cook eggs (11am). Checked tenderness with a plastic knife LOL. Went into the cooler to rest while we tooled around on the snowy forest roads. 4pm got back and pulled the beef. Amazing sandwiches, and will cook a clod again. Hope I remember the plastic knife to check tenderness, cuz I got no idea what I cooked it to! Anyways, here are some pix. PERFECT weather for egging.
Purty country
Listened to gurgling stream all weekend
Preeemo spot
Never had this beer, and never seen around home.
Our egging camp!
Beef shoulder clod and fatties
Tooling around on Middle Mountain road. Trecherous conditions, and you can slide off the hill anywhere....but fun!
Zero degrees enough to start freezing a cold creek overnight.
Happy New Year to all!

People are going out of their way to get out of the cold. You are going out of your way to stay cold. LOL
Nice setup Chris. When you get back, can you send me the maple/raging river recipe for sausage? Dhuff said it was really good.

Up on the Allegheny Plateau in West Virginia. It's a remote high country....remote, like a "Deliverance" kinda remote.
No shooting, except for some fireworks we set off NY eve. It was pretty wind seeing them bounce off the trees.
Cheers!
Chris -
Hey Mike. Yeah, we're a little bit nuts, but every single one of us had an absolute blast. Two nights with nothing to think about except getting a fire built.
For the sausage, for each pound of ground pork, add 2 tbs raging river (or redeye) and 1/4 cup of pure maple syrup (pure maple sugar if you have it). Add a little extra salt...I dunno, a couple tsp? Blend together, refrigerate overnight if possible, then make patties or fatties. Cook low speed direct until browned and rendered.
Happy new year!

We kept saying "holy sh** it's beautiful!"
Happy new year mang.
Chris -

Happy New Year to you too mang. -
Ya, but we didn't get to watch any football :-(

Looks fantastic Chris, cold but fantastic. I camped out in the White Mountains in New Hampshire one weekend years ago when we got three feet of snow. The best insulation in the world (well, almost ). Next morning the sun was out and it was spectacular. We didn't have an egg with us, should have. Thanks for sharing.

You do know you can record those sounds and listen to them under the electric blanket at home don't you.
Many, many years ago when I was dumber we took the boys into the mountains - 15 to 20 feet of snow and build snow caves. A candle would keep the inside of the cave at shirt sleeve temperature.
Nice looking camp.

Really enjoyed those photos. Great stuff.

Very cool indeed Chris. I have camped in some pretty tough conditions but never quite that cold(close) and certainly not that much snow.
Part of me is jeaous, but the sane part says Im cold enough as it is.
Thanks for sharing!

It's funny....we did play some disc (frisbee) golf. Really. Whoever won the hole would pick the next hole. We usually aimed at tree trunks. Even had a couple creek crossings.
Cheers!

One of the great things about a trip like this, is that when you get home, you gain a new appreciation for warm water and an electric blanket.
New years beers to ya bro.

The clod was amazing. It was also fun cooking a new cut without being able to measure internal temp, and sleeping 8 hours on a winter night while the egg chugged along. I think one of the guys opened the vents a tad at 4am when they went to bed, but overall the egg chugged along, and the plastic knife test and the 4 hour rest turned our some really nice beef. Still have half of it in the cooler on the porch (frozen solid of course).
We were all surprised how good it was, and all agreed it was sorta like a brisket/pork butt. Pulled like a pork butt, tasted like a brisket. Would have taken pictures of the pulled meat, but it was dark, and steam was pouring off the meat into the bitter cold air. It was like a cloud of steam, and the boys were hungry.
Happy 2010

It's nice to have the Egg to keep you warm Chris
