Just curious as to what different methods we are all using to start our Egg adventures? I was using the starter blocks for years, but in the last two months have switched to the torch method and love it. What are you all doing to start yours?

I did the same as you, I started out with the starter blocks and not much later switched to the Mapp Torch. I keep some starter blocks around just in case.

I'm still on paper towels and old used fish cookin oil.I still got a half gallon left after a year.I cook at least 5 nites a week.When I run out,I'm gonna fry some more fish and use that oil after about 3 cooks!!!The cycle continues!

I too have gone the way of a torch.
I used to use (still do every now and again) birch bark. I’ve got SOOO much of it I just feel the need to use it, not to mention it’s free.
OTOH, the torch is faster and failsafe. -
Another week
Today was spent on a sand bar that was miles off the coast and probably 2-4 square miles in size. Outa control cool. Party central :woohoo:

Oh, it was also about 3/4 of a mile from Gilligans Island. :P (true story) -

Ya, sorry Tiger. Keep the torch and if you can, stand behind the dome when lighting. It can be sparky sometimes. -
Like a propane torch but burns a little hotter.

It's like a propane torch (hand held) but a hotter burning gas. Plumbers use them to heat copper for making connections. You can get the lump going pretty darn quick and you will never have that "is it going" feeling.

What is the "torch method?" Just lighting the charcoal directly with a propane torch?

I agree, a little more information is needed here as well. Do you just start the fire in the middle of the pile or all over the top? How does it affect the hickory wood put in for smoke? Light it up and then add wood chips? Thanks.

I use a $10. electric starter from wally world. Works great and i've got time.
This past fall Ace hardware had a buy one get one sale so for $10. I got two!

I use the weed burner method. I light the used lump first, which is sitting at the bottom of the fire box. After I get the old lump burning, I add the new lump and then light it, so all the lump is burning.

I have a question for people who use the weed burner. Do you experience a lot of sparks when the flame is really hot? I do, so I have to turn the regulator down, and it takes longer for the lump to catch. I'm a little concerned about the sparks flying. Is this normal, or is it due to the lump I use? I'm thinking of trying different types of lump for this purpose. I usually buy my lump at H-E-B (a local grocery store in Texas).

It all depends on what and how your cooking. For a low-n-slow you only need to light it in 2-3 places. For a 400* cook, maybe in 5 spots. For some high temp stuff like searing and pizzas, I get it going all over the place.
But would never start it (just) in the middle, as you can get a vertical burn and end up with a donut of lump that isn't burning anymore.
Mix in your smoking wood before or toss it in after. For a long butt cook, you should mix it in with the lump so you get the smoke throughout the cook. For shorter cooks you can just toss'em in after you light it.
