Pizza Peel

I've got the baking stone, now all I need is a peel to start egging some pizza. I am going to attempt to make one on my own. Does anyone have recomendations on which materials to use (or not to use)! Can't decide between wood or metal.
Thanks!
Thanks!

Mine are pine I think. Other commercially available peels appear to be maple. I want to try making one out of walnut; lighter weight than maple and just as easy to work as softwoods (plus it can be thinner than pine).
I hate it when I go to the kitchen for food and all I find are ingredients!

Just finished my second and made them both out of Cherry. Outside of the fact it was all leftover scrap layin around the shop. It is also a nice tight grained wood, extremely dense, and beautiful to look at. One was American Cherry and the other is Brazilian Cherry.
This is the finished American Cherry
This is just shaped and not sanded yet Brazilian Cherry. I finished it on Sunday and sent it to it's new home on Monday. I bet he posts a picture of it soon.
Do you have a planer? -
im really happy with mine, its unfinished wood and the unfinished grain of the wood seems to hold just enough flour rubbed in that i dont need cornmeal on it to get the pie to slide easily. seems to be getting better the more i cut pies on it as well, mybe the knife cuts hold even a little more flour. i dont like cornmeal cooked under the crust.fukahwee maineyou can lead a fish to water but you can not make him drink it

I have a metal one and like it. No worry about warping.
Easy clean.A custom wooden one looks nicer though.

I'm just getting started on the whole pizza on the egg thing...I've made a few, alot of trials and errors. For me, i own both. I like to make the pizzas on the wooden peel, and take off with the aluminum. Or you could go the super peel method. The dough will stick to either, use corn meal or parchement paper. Good luck, have fun!

I got a piece of birch plywood 3/16 of an inch thick for mine and I made the handle out of some walnut I had. It is working great; I've made a lot of pizzas and it is holding up really well.

I'd go with one of each too. It works better to stretch the dough on a large wooden peel. But the aluminum one slides under the cooked pizza better without pushing it around the stone. Plus the aluminum peels usually have a nice long handle that makes for a nice presentation as you pull the pizza out. Makes you look like a professional.

Have three homemade
The one for the XL is made out of scrap redwood
The ones for the small and mini are made out of a single piece of oak.

That's half the battle Have fun with it.

Thanks Frank. They really are fun to make. Cutting boards are next. I have some Apple glued up for a little cheese board.

NICE Frank! I have a buncha Oak stock to use. This will keep me busy in the slow times of winter. Dig those handles Way fancy!

Made four from some scrap a while back. Alternating maple and mahogany
The left over maple came from a butcher block top that I made for my nephew. He wasn't going to chop on it, so I put a finish on it.
No sawdust making since the beginning of the year with new job, moving, etc. Good thing my bride and I aren't alergic to cardboard and bubble wrap - still have a way to go. -
Good clean fun!

Frank,
Don't want to ask a dumb question but how thick do you cut the material and how do you get it thin? I have thickness planer, band saw, table saw, and sanders etc.

The peel is about 5/8" between the throat and and midpoint. It tapers to a point from the midpoint. I used a belt sander to shape the taper.

Neither of us are using plywood. Just taking strips glueing them together and then planned down and sanded up.
Thanks, -
Kind words
Thanks,
