I ordered 8lbs of Tri-Tip from the local butcher, and didn't ask when I called what the per lb cost was. I showed up and it was $7.99 a pound. I've never done Tri-Tip before, and this seems like a lot.

That all depends, I have seen it as low as $3.79lb, for Choice here in California, I also have seen it for more like $5.45lb. It also depends on what grade of meat it is. If it is select you got taken, if it is Prime it may be OK.

The last ones I got were 3.99 a lb. but you might have a better grade.

CAB (Certified Angus Beef) tri tip goes for around 5.49 per pound, so unless you got prime or CAB you were taken.You find choice for around 3.99 to 4.99 per pound but there is no consistancy in the quality.

depends where you is ... i am in the phila. burbs and it is not common here,, guys were posting about it for a year before that cut showed up and only at wegmans,, grade of beef effects price as well ... here, at that price, i would expect usda choice.

Sound about what the local independent grocers/whole paycheck charge for the organic stuff.

You got the tri-tip from a local butcher. He might not buy as much as lets say a Costco, so the price of the tri tip might be a bit higher. Also the grade of the tri tip is a factor as well.
