Hello,
I am considering buying a Large to extra large EGG, I was wondering how these eggs work for smokin, & Grillin. I am ready to make an investment in an EGG and wondering if you all could give me some pros or cons on this Green EGG. I have a family of 3 & would cook on occasions for 5-7, what size should I get ?, I like to smoke Brisket,Chicken & pork for 8-12 hours, how would this application work on this EGG. How does this egg retain heat for hours on end ?.
Thanks,
Brad

Welcome
take a little time and read down through the forum. you will see this asked a lot
a large is the most common and I cook the most on my mini or my small. it is surprising how much they hold. as far as heat retention 25-30 hours long enough, with out reloading? I have two posts below about dinner that I baked tonight. these things are great and can do about anything. but take the time to read and learn and ask too

Brad...welcome to the forum! Here is a link for you...discussing your very same question. There are 798 matches to LG vs XL....this should give you all the info you need. (In fact there is enough reading material in this link to keep you busy for a while)

http://www.eggheadforum.com/index.php?searchword=Large+vs+XL&dtstart=0&dtrange=0&orderby=score&pagelength=50&returnfirst=0&option=com_simpleboard&Itemid=55&func=search
The Large is the 'preferred' Egg of most here. The XL is absolutely huge!! 5-7 people?? NOOO problem on the large, and then some!!
Again, welcome! -
Works great for low n slow cooks, I've had it hold for 15-16 hours while doing pork butts with left over lump when all done. Look at the large should be plenty, can ad cooking surface with extra grid from BGE or Ceramic Grill Store :woohoo:

Rather than buy an XL you would be happier spending essentially the same amount of money and buy a large and a small. That combo is very popular and you'll find the small itself will serve a family of 3 for many of your meals. With 2 you can do side dishes at different temps etc. Give it some real thought before you go XL.Re-gasketing the USA one yard at a time

This is a pre-recorded message:
I often hear that the large does not have the capacity to cook for a large family.
Let me tell you that is a lot of bull. When my family gets together we are typically 20+. My XL sits there and wishes I would use him.
So here is my proof:
Please note the amount of sausage on this egg:
6 7-9 pound butts on this egg:
Just for contrast please note the amount of meat on this Lang 60:
I cooked 18 butts on 3 eggs and took up less space.
My XL gets used when I cater and even then it's only used for something that may not physically fit on my large and can't be cut into smaller chunks.
Ohh did I tell you I have 2 small eggs too. You will NOT be disappointed with the Egg, unless you fail to learn how to use it or don't use it. Many of us use it as our primary cooking -
As you have no doubt guessed, I too recommend a Large.
There's 4 of us (more at holidays) and the Large is fine.
2 weeks ago I cooked 4 butts (24 hours) for pulled pork for a concession stand at my daughter's school function. After skimming some off the top for us that left enough for 60 odd sammiches.
With the Egg Bigger doesn't necessarily mean Better- you get the size that's right for you! -
To all the BBQ Chefs,

I really appreciate the wonderful response to my question on this product. I want to thank all you members for your info & with this kind of support it looks like a great product. I am a BBQ buff & live for the next time I can indulge myself in another awesome meal. I well be looking to buy this BIG GREEN EGG in the near future and join this group of BBQ Elite chefs.
Thanks again,
Brad
PS: I well be watching -

I live in the Los angeles, CA area & I am wondering if anyone might know of a distributor with a very good price on one of these EGGS.

Brad,
Love my large. I also have a small and the combo is very useful.
I look forward to you joining this "Cult" and seeing your posted cooks.
You will never regret this purchase! -
We know a very good dealer in the Bay area if you are up for a drive.

THE LARGE EGG IT WELL BE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I do not remember being this excited about an EGG
Now it is time to look for my egg (underneath a GREEN CHICKEN), and design a custom outdoor cooking station for this hatched EGG.

Brad I am I LA as well. My feelings are that the two best dealers in CA are Smitty at Eggs by the Bay in San Fran. and Shad at OKC in Upland CA. BBQ's galore also carries eggs but the staff at my local one (Pasadena) are not eggsperts. As you are just getting started Smitty or Shad would be my choice.

We bought a large in early September and can't believe how much we use it, how great the food is and how much just plain fun it is to use! We grill, bake, smoke and stir fry on it a couple times a week.

You actually have a BBQ Galore that is still open?
-
You all make the XL the bastard child of the BGE. Ouch ! It does the same thing as the Large.
