Large BGE Setup Question

I am putting my large BGE together today and getting ready to tighten the bands. I want to be sure I've got them lined up correctly. The instructions say that I should move the upper band as necessary to "make the space between the bands equal to the rear on the sides and front also". If I do this it looks like the upper band is right on the very bottom edge of the dome. Is that correct? I don't want to mess this beautiful thing up!

    Go here http://www.fredsmusicandbbq.com/category_s/241.htm

We set ours up last week and were very happy we'd found Fred's excellent videos about everything EGG, this is three parts and it led us through a flawless assembly. Happy egging :)

Thanks for the link but it really doesn't answer my question. The video is too fuzzy to see where the upper band sits. If I just had a good close-up photo of the BGE I could see if my location looks right but everything I've found on the web so far is not close enough.

I really just need a yes or no answer - Is the upper band low enough so you can't see any green ceramic below it?
  • I can see a little green below my upper band, but you may not see that on yours. There usually is some variance in all eggs, so it may not be possible to have 2 eggs with the bands positioned in the exact same spot.
Do like the directions say, make sure the bottom band is as low as it can go all the way around. Then look at how much space is between the bottom and top band in the hinge area. Adjust the top band so that the gap is the same all the way around the egg as it is in the hinge area.
The main thing is to adjust it so as you do not have a gap. When done, do the dollar bill test. If you are not familiar with that let us know.

Thanks for that information. I think I must have the band in the right place then. I do know about the dollar bill test.

It's a little late to finish up tonight but I should be able to do my first cook tomorrow night. I'm excited to get started cooking!
  • Believe me, it's all about to change. Happy egging.
