Based on reading many threads of folks that have one I chose to junp on the bandwagon of a mapp torch. I will try it a bit later. Hopefully I don't burn the house down.

If you don't mind my asking, how much did you give for that torch?? Found similar at local hardware for $49.95 :pinch: that would buy a lot of BGE starters...still undecided....unless could pick one up for a bit less $$$ :ermm:

Please remember to post how it went for you, unless of course your house is on fire. :pinch:

DOW,
I use the propane version of the torch with the fat boy bottle - cheaper. I couldn't rationize the cost difference. Don't have a clue what I might be missing except for high temp and more money. -
Thanks, Bill
Was wondering what was the diff between gasses :S
Besides $$$! -
Guess it all boils down to how much of pyromaniac you are

:( sure miss that crazy pyro guy's posts!!

Mapp gas will light when the bottle is inverted or stay lit as you are lighting your lump.
Propane will more often than not go out when inverted.
Mapp also burns hotter than propane2 LBGE

Watch for sparks. They will burn a hole in a long sleeve faster than you can say "Oh, what is happening?".

Thats what I paid for it at HD. I don't care for the starters. I think I like the control of applying the flame until I am happy with how the lump is burning-Eddie

I will. Even if the house is on fire. I have my iPhone with me all the time. LOL-Eddie

Actuall I guess this is not a mapp torch. It uses the fat boy propane.-Eddie

Don't want to sound like a safety geek here but I would turn my head while lighting or wear safety glasses. The lump does a lot of sparking and popping according on brand and how close you are to lump. Other than that these things are great. I thought the same about price and wondered If I should buy one. I'm glad I did. You can take these things and light in about 4 or 5 places if your wanting a high temp cook, go in the house and prep your steaks about 10 minutes and come back out to a 500 or 600 degree egg. When I get home from work late it kinda lets me get a hot egg quick versus waiting on the cubes. Good luck with it.

Hold it aways away from the lump when lighting and you will eliminate most of the sparking. Also, lump saved from previous cooks will not spark like new lump.
-
I bought the next model up. attaches with a 5 ft hose. allows you to keep the bottle upright and bury the tip under the first layer of lump. Keeps the sparks down, though it was $69 I think....has other uses though if I ever decide to tackle some plumbing (that is what I told the wife anyway...)

I have the one NoVA Bill is talking about with the blue "Fat Max" bottle and it was like $20 I think. Quick and easy.
