My granddaughters were part of a Memorial Day Parade in Elm Grove, WI, which is a suburb of Milwuakee. They were going to be riding shetland ponies. We were waiting in the staging area for the parade to start and there was an annoucement that the parade was cancelled. There had been a serious accident on the parade route. A woman in a mini van with her 3 children was stuck in a line of traffic on railroad tracks trying to get to the parade. There was an oncoming train and she was not able to move. The womans husband was in a car behind her and saw the oncoming train. He jummped out of his vehicle to grab his wife and children out of the car. A police officer who was nearby ran to help also. The train hit the car seconds after the wife and children got out.
The police officer and the woman's 46-year-old husband were both injured. When the train hit the minivan the police officere was thrown 100 ft. Both the husband and police officer were taken by "Flight for Life" to the Milwaukee Trauma Center and are in critical condition. We are praying hard for both of them.

Anne,
Very sad indeed. Sounds like the husband and the police officer put other lives ahead of their own. Heroic.

Heroes to say the least.

Wow Anne...That hits close to home. Just watched that story of the National News. Will say a prayer here for there quick recovery.
-
I too will be praying for them. Please let me know how they are doing if you hear anything.
Chuck -
What an awful thing to happen! My prayers are with them also...
-
Prayers coming from CA. How traumatic for all involved.
-
Not sure how to reply to my worst fear as an locomotive engineer. Glad to hear mother and children made it out and hope the husband and police officer have a speedy recovery.
Rant:
Why in God's name would anyone stop a vehicle on a railroad track with children on board!!!????
People of earth . . . use your brain!
End of Rant.

I said to my wife, 'Where do you want to go for our anniversary?' She said, 'I want to go somewhere I've never been before.' I said, 'Try the kitchen.'

Stuff like that always puts me in my place. I just posted I was bored. I am very fortunate!!! Will be thinking & praying that the people involved will be alright.
-
:( How very sad, indeed. But I don't understand, like Loco-Engr said, why in God's name would anyone EVER stop on the tracks--even though they may be empty at the time
-
I have to agree with you. We're all wondering why in the world they were allowing trains going through during the parade time. Are they able to reroute or postpone them?
-
We're praying too Anne. Please keep us informed of the situation.
-
The rr in question certainly had the ability to hold trains if they knew about a parade going over their tracks.aka marysvilleksegghead

I agree Kari. Just doesn't make any sense. I'm sure more of the story will come out as to why things happened. Thank god nobody was killed, it's amazing. We're waiting for updates and saying prayers.
-
He is was in that line of work and has probably seen it many times. The few times I have got on the tracks not expecting to, I look around for a train in case I need to bail. I'm sure he said it out of fustration more than anything else.
-
The parade wasn't going over the tracks. The tracks were a few blocks from the start of the parade but it was a road that was needed to get to the parade.
-
We will certainly pray for all of them. Thank God the minivan had doors that open on both sides.
I love the pics of the kids and I guess your daughter. Who was who?. Rory thought the name of the type of horses was funny because, he said there was a dirty word hidden in the name of the pony. I immediately explained that it was a "SHET"land pony. Crazy kid! -
They'll be in my prayers too.
-
That story sounds like a movie script cept it really happened. Will say a prayer for them and God bless them.
-
Anne....a very sad story indeed....by the looks of the minivan it was a miracle they survived..... with the help of the husband & police, thank God for that. Hope they come out ok. Sometimes life takes tremendous blows...all I can say is we must learn from them and have hope, & faith,in our future.
-
thoughts and prayers are coming to WI. I think I would have rammed the back of the minivan...had I been behind. But who has time to think?
Kim -
My daughter wasn't in the picture, it was girls that help with the horses. That's funny about Rory, how cute.
Tell him I said "hi". Hope you had a nice weekend Todd. Back to reality tomorrow. -
I agree Kim, but these things happen so quickly. It was seconds after they were all out that the train hit. It could've really been tragic.
-
Anne that is so sad, out thoughts and prayers go out to both of them and there familys. It is sad when something bad happens specialy for an event that was for something so good.
-
Anne,
I hope that those guys will be OK-- -
Good Lord, Anne! Prayers are going out right now!! What greater love and sacrifice can two individuals give than this.........please keep us updated!
-
Indeed! The unfortunate woman put two people in the hospital by doing something that you just simple NEVER do. Very sad.The Naked Whiz
