Here are the pics showing the fire ring and firebox in my medium. As you can see, there is a *lot* of room between the fire ring and the sides of the Egg. The firebox, though, is a pretty good fit. This is the replacement firebox they shipped me after the old one cracked. This one has cracked, too, but so far I've seen no huge need to replace it. You can see that there is a flange-like edge all the way around the top of the box to mate it more closely to the Egg body.

Thank you very much for taking the time to take and post the pictures that is helpful.
Here is a picture of my medium. The gap is the same all the way around, you can see the foil that I have to stuff to plug the gap.

I can see your point about loss of air flow *if* the firebox also has a gap to the sides of the Egg. But - as you can see in the picture of my firebox - when I took the fire ring off, there was an unbroken ring of ash all the way around the inside where the ring met the box. So I don't think I'm losing a whole lot of flow there.
Does your firebox have an equally large gap?
