32lbs of Yum!

Well it started out as a little over 32lbs, probably around 20lbs now. I put these on at 00:00 and took off at 17:30. Using TJV's rig, I was able to fit 2 layers of butt. When they started they were touching and you can see in the pic that they probably shrunk about 3" ea. Having butts stacked on top of each other with just a grate in between (there was no actual air space to begin with) didn't really add much time to the cook. Also, a good bark was formed everywhere except the bottom fat of the top butts. I usually toss most of that anyway. The maverick performed admirably.
Kicked up the temp at the end to finish (I normally do this)
Ready to come off
Side view
Top of the bottom butts, still got a little bark
Resting in the cooler now

Those look great Corey...I will be doing a small butt and ribs tomorrow for Mother's Day...I have been sick since Tuesday but your butts made feel hungry again...
-
Thanks Kim, there's nothing like a little pig to get a man to feeling better...(well, beer helps too )
-
Yep I haven't had much but chicken broth all week but I did have a few beers today....
-
Great looking cook. Congrats! I love some pulled pork. I just done a slab of spares and then chased it with a spatchcocked bird. Im ready for a nap! Happy Egging!
-
Lookin good there Cory :woohoo: BTW: this was 42lbs(I think)on the XL,it actually yielded only 25lbs I did eat a little while pulling it though :P
-
Thanks, I am thinking that spares are up for me next weekend on a camping trip :woohoo:
-
Doug, I was being optimistic about the 20lbs, I'll be lucky to get 16 But it'll be more than enough, I am also doing a maple syrup/butter basted smoked turkey breast (Raichlen) for these folks on site tomorrow.
I will have to do a bit of quality control checks to make sure that everything is OK of course  -
Cory,
Great job on this cook! Those butts really look good.
What was your setup?
I'm guessing an upright spider with drip pan. Original BGE grid on fire ring, 14" grid on the highest slot of the adjustable rig. Did you have a pizza stone between the drip pan and the lump?
Close? -
Thanks.
1. Down spider
2. Pizza stone on spider
3. Drip on stone no air gap (will try to change that next time)
4. BGE grid - meat
5. Oval ring on 2nd from top level of adj. rig - 2nd level of meat
So yes you were really close. -
Great job on the cook! I really like Tom's rig a lot, too! You hosting the neighbors for dinner with all that goodness?
-
Thanks Mike, Doing a small catering gig tomorrow. 'Course the neighbors are snooping around for their portions
-
Thanks, that will be helpful when I have to do several butts like you did.
Again, it looks like you did a great job on those hunks of meat! ! :woohoo: -
Awesome cook. Congrats!
