Don't be careless, like me.

I just want to remind everyone not to be careless when decreasing egg temps. Last night I overshot my 400 goal by 100 degrees and closed both vents significantly. After several minutes I decided to brush the grate and opened the dome. Most of you know what happened next. I'm missing some hair on my arm, eyebrows, eyelids and scalp. It could have been a lot worse!

Did you have the same "Oh oh, I think I'm going to get...!!!" moment I had a half second after starting to raise the dome? :P
-
Exactly! about the same time as you smell something burning.
-
This is what we refer to as a "self-correcting mistake".

Been there, done that! Fortunately I was wearing glasses but my eyebrows still got singed! As Ogden Nash would say... It could have been verse!

One day my barber asked me why I hadn't been cooking on the egg lately. I told him I had been cooking on it regularly and asked why he thought I wasn't cooking. He said, "your eyebrows haven't been singed for a while."XLBGE & LBGENorth Richland Hills, TX

I see the human mind works very similar amongst people.
One of my experiences.
This past weekend I cooked some pizzas on my egg at nuclear temps (750+). I wanted to listen to the sizzlin' cheese, so I put my ear over the top vent and instantly smelt and heard my hair singe around my ear. After moving away I asked myself "Why do I always do dumb things?" -
At least we aren't as dumb as Max's guy with the taser! It's funny how most everyone in our lives knows about the Egg. We can't help but tell everyone about our experience with it.

Supposedly, humans are set apart by their ability to project (if I do A, B will happen) and making decisions based upon all your past experiences. Both are part of the so called higher reasoning. In the Triune Brain these abilities reside in the neocortex.
Well for some reason my higher reasoning in this regard is broken (I wonder if that is under warranty), as I have done the little "backdraft" experiment more than once now, but fortunately only once in the fashion you describe.
What seems to be working fine in my Triune Brain, is the R-complex (reptilian brain) as the survival instinct kicks in and it is fight or flight, and the first time this happen I dropped the lid (fortunately w/o damage).

Ross in Ventura shared his experience with us a while back.

GG - I think Ross's was worse than mine. My skin is still the same color as before. I know you have a lot of information for newbies so maybe you should add Ross's picture to it for safety reasons.

That might be a good idea. For those that don't want take a minute and look at TNW's flashback page they should at look at that post.
I think Ross was just showing off . He sure has a collection of nice looking meat cooks.

He sure does! He loves his rib eyes and so do I.

Cory, the arm picture is one thing now how about the hedge picture from your brief flame thrower days!
