charcoal starter

Should have a large egg within a week!
Question - what do most of you use for getting the charcoal lite? I see they make a electric starter - eggcelarator - propane torch. I think I heard no lighter fluid - so I want to be ready for the first cook!
Does everyone on this site use the same method? Thanks

The best option I have found is to use the charcoal funnel..
-
I used the wax type cubes. One or two depending on the type of fire I want and if I'm in a hurry.
-
I use an electric starter that I bought at Wallyworld. I leave it in the charcoal for 6-8 minutes and it does a great job with very little fuss. Congrats and good luck with your egg. I picked up a small yesterday to add versatility to the BGE that I have.

Whats up Ribhead
I aint heard from you in a while. What's the ETA on the egg?
I use a propane weed burner. It's fast easy and clean. You heard right...no lighter fluid. Would'nt want to get that smell/taste in the ceramic. Not everyone uses the same method but there are a lot of weed burners sold because of this forum. -
My egg came with two boxes of the wax firestarter blocks. That is real easy. Not sure if I will try something else when I run out. I'll read to see what others do...

Paper towel and oil.

MAPP torch - three places, 10 seconds each place. Been using the same tank for over a year now, 4 or more times each week.

Thanks for all your help!
Should I just purchase the electric starter made my the BigGreenEgg and be done with it! I think it costs around $25 bucks! Can you buy them cheaper! Thks -
Same here!
Once you feel the raw power of the weed burner it's hard to go back to the cubes!
That said, my buddy no longer uses his to start the egg. The sparking and flying embers were too much of a concern.

Hey Fire, Hoping to have this weekend but these 3 kids have my running rampant! Within 2 weeks FOR SURE!
Is hooking up this propane unit hard! Isnt just a propane tank with a hose and handle! Where would I purchase the hose and handle! Thnks -
I generally use Alcohol as described in a couple of very good videos on Youtube.

I understand and would go the burner route if I had a fine fireproof outdoor kitchen like yours, John. However since I egg on a wooden deck I watch my fire starters and embers! Heck I don't even use my MAPP all that often.
BTW you want any rain and high winds? We have plently to share up here!Re-gasketing America one yard at a time. -
I have use wax starters, Newspaper, oil on paper towel, and a weed burner. It all depends on what is the handiest at the time. All work I like using the Oil and paper towel and the newspaper the best because I always have them around and they are cheap. :cheer:

Use anything... yo mama's old bras... but no lighter fluid!
For me and my house -- weed burner... which admittedly is overkill. :woohoo:
If the fire marshal happens to drive by, OO on napkins...

I got my weed burner at amazon.com. I picked the cute one that uses the little propane tanks. It was the girliest weed burner I found. Ha ha ha! The guys are right, I get drunk with power.

I have been useing the wax cubes with no problems. 10-15 minutes and it is ready to go. I usually let it go 20 minutes or so while I finish any preps
-
use fire starters. I put a few small pieces over the lit lump charcoal. give it about 10 minutes or so and it you are on your way. Enjoy you BGE!
-
You can do this in a pinch - although you can use a match to light it...
-
I use wax cubes, if I am out paper towel with oil. Torch is probably faster though.
-
There are different ones. Most folks use one with a nozzle attached to a 20lb bottle. Mine is real simple, I bought it at lowes for around 25 dollars I think.
