This usually works:
Hold the bag between your legs so that the seam runs away from you. You want the smooth side of the stitching on the right. If it is on the left, turn the bag 180 degrees. Cut the stitching on the end furthest from you and on the rough side. Start pulling and cutting and pulling and usually the string come out.The Naked Whiz -
If you look at the stitching, you'll see that there's one side that looks like a smooth stitch and the other side looks --- more complicated. Put the bag with the smooth stitch facing you. Go to the right end of the bag. Snip the end off the string that extends just past the end of the bag. Pick the strings apart. One of the loose ends will pull. Voila.

Oh, and there aren't bags made not to unthread. Sometimes they're just stubborn.
-
Dude look at the time. You beat me by ONE second.

I'm lucky, probably 3 out of 4 times I can get the little white string to pull off. If not, I just rip it off!!! Now that makes me feel better! Oh, by the way about all I use is Ozark Oak (under $5 here in OKC), they may do a better job of stitching. :woohoo:

Thanks a lot guys! Now I got 8 bags of coal open in my garage! :ermm: :woohoo: :woohoo:

Haven't read the above replies...but as I open my 50 lb bags of horse pellets, and dog food, as I look at the front of the bag....you pull on the right side first. Or...if you're standing behind the bag...with front facing away from you...pull on the left side.....make sense???

Tear that sucker open with your teeth! GRRRRR :woohoo:

Shears for me. I don't even bother with the string.

I almost always open it pulling the string... I love the unzipping sound it makes... hehehe
It's a simple consecutive sewing sequence witha knot at the end... I don't know if they are always on the left or right but I can pretty much identify it by now... you just have to find the correct side, undo the knot (which sometimes is double) and pull slowly (so that if it is the correct side you don't turn it too tight and you're still able to undo the knot) if it doesn't work, try the other side, and if it doesn't work you've screwed it up and just pry it open with your hands heheh :P
cheers!! -
You need a little cutting tool. You know the razer knife with the tips that snap off. Cut under the lip of one side of the bag and the rest will open. It is so simple and takes me 15 seconds. Slit open and pour

To opening the bag with the pull string, you already have a 50/50 chance of getting it right!
Look at the stitching, if it looks like this:
You are at the wrong end!
If it looks like this:
You have the right end.
As you pull, it should go like this:
-
I tear it...my fingers are too fat to use the string

Great tip and I thank you.Now I don't have to look for the knife or any other sharp object in my shed when it is time to open one of those hummers up.On the other hand most of us after a couple of beers probably would not be able to tell the difference.Out comes my magic marker to tag that frigging end of the string and I will be able to find it with one eye open. Thanks again.

Glenn, I have replied to your email.
As for the tool I use when I can't get the string to work is one of those letter opener items with the built in razor that businesses give away at trade shows. It works well and quickly!Re-gasketing America one yard at a time. -
I grew up on a farm where feed bags came stitched shut and can remember wondering how come my Dad never had a problem opening them. I used to go crazy trying to figure out his trick to it. Something must have rubbed off because I don't have much trouble now.
Here is another link that might help. Then again it might not. It's one of those things that is easier to demonstrate then to explain and then if you try to demonstrate you just know it will be the one time doesn't work.

I second the scissor method. I can live without the frustration of the string not pulling.
