I'm looking to get a vacuum sealer device for storing and freezing food. Any suggestions and help on brands/ cost as well as results is appreciated. Have there been any ratings done, e.g., Cooks Illustrated? Thanks for your help.

Bought this one (v2240 $110) a few months back and have been real happy with it. Oh and thats the 9# of buckboard bacon I smoked up yesterday.
-
Thanks FP. Just lloking now but they seem to be a great idea when storing raw as well as cooked food. The bacon looks great but I'm not familar with "buckboard". Does it taste more like ham?
-
It does when you use the loin, more like bacon if you use a butt

If you go on Foodsaver's website, you can sign up for e-mail of special deals. There was an outstanding deal right around Christmas on the v2860 for something like $50 (they sold out in record time). I recently got the v2840 (same thing, just in white instead of black/stainless) for around the same price. (don't quote me on the model numbers, I'm going from memory  )
I bought it to replace a v845 and the new ones with the wider strip seem MUCH better. I also like that I can buy the rolls of bag material at Costco.Egging in Crossville, TN -
I've been using the Tila Food Saver v2440 for over a year. Before that I had an older model for about 8 years. They really work great. Buy one that automatically knows when to stop vacuuming and seal the bag. Only buy Food Saver bags...they are specially designed to extract nearly all the air. You should also get their marinating container and Ball jar sealer.

Thanks mkc. Costco is the reason I'm getting one. The meat packages contains enough meat for 4 dinners. Thanks for the info/advice.

Saw the V3840 at Costco today for $149.00 with the same accessories listed here:

I bought this one this past weekend at Bass Pro. They had it marked down to $87.97.

Packed up about 24 pork chops in 10 minutes. Used up about 3'-4' of rolls. It seemed to work good.
I got mine with (4) rolls. -
Thanks Peddler. This forum is so informative. I don't think I'll need the jar sealer but will definitely look at the marinating container. Thanks for the advice.

Is that like canadian bacon?
-
yes,, first time trying the loin and it's great. I like it better than the butt.

There are multiple FoodSaver models with minor differences, often cosmetic.
I suggest you look for one with these three features as a minimum:
(1) Automatic vac-n-seal (speeds things up when you're doing many bags)
(2) Pulse/manual mode (very helpful when sealing wet or crushable ingredients).
(3) Canister port, with hose attachment
Even if you don't think you want canisters or jar attachments or marinators now, having the port will make such options available later.
Bags do add up. If you're shopping at Costco, they do well with their box of bag rolls.
I use a V2490 and my only gripe is that if I'm sealing many bags in sequence, the process starts to slow a bit as the machine has heating issues. I've never had a sealed bag fail. In addition to storing uncooked meat, I use the machine frequently for sous vide cooking, for seasonal vegetables and fruits, and for storing leftovers. -
This one works relatively well, you can read the reviews. I tried it and liked it. Some of the others are flimsey. This one is also on sale for about half the going price, now under $100

Thanks CD. Great info and appreciate the help.

Thanks Dover. I will be looking closely at FoodSaver.

I got the FoodSaver 3840 for christmas (the Costco model), and love it!
Bought replacement rolls at Costco, too.
Works great for marinading, too - bags don't leak. Also used for curing my buckboard bacon. Will give it a real workout tonight, slicing and sealing 14# of buckboard bacon. -
I just bought a food saver over christmas. Research them on Amazon.com . You will be able to read lots of reviews. If you do buy it online, do a google search for Food Saver Coupons. I found a bunch and saved a lot.
For what its worth, whatever you buy online, so a google search to see if there are coupons for it. It's amazing how much you can save doing it that way.
