Membrane Removal

HotGrillHarry,[p]I usually have to grab the membrane with a paper towel in my hand to keep it from slipping. Sometimes it takes a few tries to get an initial corner to start, but then it usually peels back fairly well.[p]Walter

Walter,
I don't remember where I saw it but the method I use to get the membrane started is to use a Phillips head screwdriver between the membrane and the ribs.
I actually go in a ways so I have a good sized piece of membrane to grab onto.

HotGrillHarry,
Buy a fish skinner at a local store; it works well on removing the membrane from ribs. start on a corner and pull. usually the membrane comes off in one piece.

HotGrillHarry,
Are you certain there was a membrane to begin with? I've had 3-packs from BJ's where the membrane had already been removed from one or two of the racks. Second, if your ribs were perfect, why worry about the membrane? And third, I usually work a butter knife between the membrane and a bone about half-way down the rack; grab the membrane with a paper towel (to prevent slippage) and gently tug towards either end.[p]HTH

Dull round end of a butter knife works well to get started, phillips screwdriver too...I like the fish skinner idea. Will have to try that one. Either way, membrane has gotta go. Ribs much better without it.

HotGrillHarry,
I use the tip of a butter knife. I work it under the membrane agaist one of the bones and pull up enough to get hold of it with a paper towel and then just pull it off. It is normally pretty easy.[p]

HotGrillHarry, As meats vary, so does the character of the membrane. I find that baby backs can be most difficult. Even had a few butchers who couldn't get it right![p]Rascal

Thanks for the advice and I think there is a good chance the membrane had already been removed.

Thanks Rascal.
