Made this recipe tonight and it turned out very good and it's very easy to make.
2 qts. sliced potaoes
1 qt diced carrots
1 1/2 cups of chopped onions
1 1/2 lbs grated sharp cheddar cheese
1 1/2 lbs ground beef
1 1/2 lbs smoked sausage ( Used a smoked sausage then I smoked it for an hr with pecan wood )
In dutch oven
Cook at 350
Brown ground beef, then add potatoes, carrots, onions and salt and pepper ( I used Shaking The Tree instead )
Every 15 min. I stirred it up.
After 1/2 hr I put the lid on the dutch oven.
After about 55 mins when the potatoes and carrots are done add the sliced sausage and cheese and put the lid back on.
After the sausage is warmed and the cheese is melted it's ready.

Mayberry Smoker,
Just curious. Why is it 40 mile stew?

Essex County,
I make something similar but with one more step that gets raves. Just about the time it is done, cover the top of the stew with canned biscuits, crank up the temp to about 400, cook till they are done on the top. They will absorb moisture on the bottom and be kind of like dumplings on the bottom.

Essex County,
Don't really know. I found the recipe on a dutch oven web site and that's what they called it. I made a half batch last night so we decided it was a 20 mile stew.
