Maple wood

I have noticed several guys here in the Forum use Maple wood for some of thier smoking needs. My question is, does it make any difference what kind of maple you use? There is quite a number of varieties of maple out there. Just wondered if there is a specific one they use. Thanks Bucky

Bucky Buckshot,[p]I don't use maple but I'd be willing to bet that silver maple would NOT be very good.

Bucky Buckshot,
I got a bag of sugar maple and the smoke from it is very unique. For lack of a better word it's soft, not an overpowering smoke. Great on chicken and pork. It's fun to play with peoples heads when they ask "what kind of smoke is there in this?"

Haggis,
Why?

TG Scouter,[p]Silver maple is a brittle and very un-dense wood (surely there's another word for 'un-dense' but I can't think of it.) I'd think it would tend to burn quickly at best with little beneficial smoke but I haven't tried it since its too much trouble - I'm always hauling away broken branches from my 80 foot silver maple trees that I really really hate! But that's only my opinion . . . your mileage might vary!
