Using the indirect plate setter

Do I need to remove the ceramic ring before putting in the indirect plate setter? I tried just adding the plate setter, but when the grill/grate rested on the plate setter, it was raised a few inches. It was raised enough that my chicken standing up wouldn't fit in the Large BGE.[p]Did I do something wrong?

Justin,
The plate setter is typically used on top of the fire ring when inverted for indirect cooking, but if you need more vertical space, you can put it on the fire box. On the other hand, you could put a drip pan on the plate setter instead of the grid, and put your chicken sitting up in the drip pan and it will be in the same location as using the grid on the fire ring.[p]TNW

The Naked Whiz,[p]Just to make sure I understand, if I put the chicken sitting up in the drip pan, I would remove the grid, right?[p]Thanks!

Justin,
Yes.

Set your Egg up like this and put your drip pan on the Egg feet. In place of the feet, you can make spacers out of smashed down aluminum foil balls.
