Just got small BGE - have some questions

Unknown
edited November -0001 in EggHead Forum
Hi -[p]Just got the small BGE today. Looks good to me. I haven't fired it up - will do so soon.[p]Have some questions though: [p]1. Did not get cooker temperature - any recommendations?[p]2. Did not get any of these daisy wheel or metal top thrown in by dealer. Was a bit disappointed as spent $$ on egg, nest, etc. What is the difference between these two?[p]3. If I cook chicken, steaks, etc - do I leave the top damper off the whole time? [p]4. I live in VT as my handle obviously shows. If there's snow or rain outside, can I cook under deck. I have a deck above the garage doors (about 12 feet above). Egg is in garage for now until spring time when I can build a new patio setup.[p]Thanks for any help.

  • VermontEgg,
    2. Your dealer should have included the metal dual function metal top (daisy wheel), but if you can get him to cough one up, buy one. It is worth it.[p]3. No, you need to use the dual function metal top to regulate temperatures. Steaks you might leave it off to sear, but for chicken roasting at 350 degrees, you need the metal top to regulate the temp.[p]4. You can cook under a deck, but why is the Egg in the garage waiting for spring? Take it outside and cook with it. You will have no problems cooking in snow ice wind rain, etc.[p]1. I'm not sure what this question is.[p]Good luck!

  • The Naked Whiz - thanks for answering so quickly,[p]I should have phrased #4 better. I meant I will cook outside out under the skies no doubt about that.[p]I meant when there's inclement weather (snowing, rain etc) as it happens often here, just wanted to check if I can cook under the 'shade' which is the wooden deck. [p]As for #1 - I meant temperature gauge. Did not get this when I picked up the egg. Is this inluded normally? if not - any recommendations.[p]Thanks

VermontEgg,[p]The Egg can cook in virtually any conditions (as you will no doubt soon be told by Eggers in the mountains, in the hurricane zone, in the frozen tundra, etc.) Yeah, it can take a little longer to heat up in the cold and if a flood is pouring into the top it might take longer, but a not much stops it.[p]Dealers are different. Most will include the thermometer and the daisy wheel top. Some will nickel and dime you to death. It sounds like you got one of the latter but maybe you got a better price on the basic Egg. You really do want both the thermometer and the daisy wheel . . .

VermontEgg,[p]Which dealer did you buy from? [p]e-amil me if you would prefer to answer that way.
  • VermontEgg,[p] Lots of 'undefined' issues. My dealer (small town) sells Small BGE for $435. + $85. for nest. BUT ... they provide temp gauge, daisy wheel + ceramic cap, and throw in a bag of BGE lump, and always include an ash tool. AND ... they offer 15% discount on all BGE accessories after the sale. Their prices seem to be 'uninflated' in terms of what I see on may web sites. I know every area can to do their own thing, but at least this should give you a reference.[p] My dealer has only stocked a few Large BGE's and one X-Large plus a few accessories. They have now brought in two Small BGE's for this month's first local EggFest (Oct 27 & 28 ). [p] Hope this helps get you rolling. I plan to add a Small BGE very soon mainly for my wife's dedicated cooker. I can try all my wild and crazy grate configs, bake bread and pizza on my Large ..... and she can do veggies, scorch peppers, cook fish and chicken .... and let me do all the butts and briskets and ribs on the Large. [p] No offense all you many Small BGE wizards![p]Tom B (EggSport)

  • Jason Upton,[p]I live in Cambridge. How do you like yours so far?
  • Sundown,[p]Stove and Flags in Williston Vt.[p]Dunno if they are trying to nickel and dime me. they seemed pleasant and friendly to me when I bought the egg from them.[p]I will go there tomorrow and ask them to see if they are willing to throw in the dual function as a courtesy. If not - I'll just take my business elsewhere. No hard feelings on my part - just less dollars for them from me.
  • VermontEgg,[p]I've got to say I don't understand this. Why would a dealer do this to a customer? Don't they want repeat business or is it quick dollar time? It seems to me that the good dealers are getting their reputations hurt by the bad ones. Maybe I'm wrong?

FSUScotsman,[p]Perhaps because BGE prices the items individually and the dealers are given the option of how to build the package sold to the customer. Its not radically different than how an automobile is sold, just at a different scale.
  • update: [p]got the daisy wheel and temperature gauage. Salesperson at store apologized and said yes they do throw this in for every egg purchase.[p]So am glad that's over with!.. Store has made me a happy customer.[p]Now will fire up egg tonight and check it out :)

Haggis, You are exactly right! Dealers can sell BGE stuff ala carte or they can package the items.[p]BeerMike
