fire starters
Options
I have been using an electric fire starter to ignite my lump but it has burned out and I thought I might try the fire starters sold by BGE. I called my local dealer who was out but said he bought lava logs at Kroger and cut slices off of them to ignite his lump. Does anyone know if this is this safe? Are there any other options? A chimney seems a little cumbersome to me. Thanks for your help.

tapple,[p]That is safe just let the pieces of log burn up prior to cooking.

tapple,
I would reccommend a MAAP torch. I light 4 spots for 10 seconds each and it is lit. If you get one, get some safety glasses too. -RP

tapple,
Anything wax and sawdust should be safe. I saw some at Target in the dollar bins at the front of the store.[p]Dennis

tapple,[p]I have been using "fatwood" in a chimney. Fatwood is the heart of a pine stump. I found it in Foodlion. I just put a little sliver under the lump and it starts great. I wait a while before putting it in the egg though.

I use pieces of the cheap firestarter logs or electric starter with a hair dryer if I want to create a furnace for charring steak.
Here's an instructional video:

tapple,[p]I use a paper towel with a couple teaspoons of vegetable oil on it.[p]Works great, always got 'em handy.
