goodies inside Mr Turkey

Curious...my Mother always placed a whole onion inside her turkey and that has become a hand me down tradition though I don't really know whether it makes any difference in the taste. I have read in some recipes lately whereby other people suggest an apple or even an orange. The orange intrigs me as they can throw off such a wonderful smell, but when subjected to heat can that be over powering? I don't want to mess up my first turkey, but if there is a surefire secret goodie like an orange I might run the risk.

Smokey, peeled? split? could you taste it in the meat or was it the aroma coming from the finished bird?

one feral kat,[p]I used a unpeeled orange with slits in it (so juices could flow. The flavor was very subtle, but noticable!

I stuff mine FULL of chopped up apples or pears. MMM MMMM! It seems to really help with the juiciness and flavor. I'm going to try some orange pieces next time too. No matter what, it won't wreck the bird.
