I had two questions I wanted to ask today. I will be doing two 8 pound butts tomorrow and 1 slab of baby back ribs and St. Louis ribs each. Do you'll think that if I fill my xl egg to the top of the bottom ring that I will have enough smoke for 16 hour cook? I plan on cooking them for around 16 hours. The second part of my question is should I foil?

One other question plate setter legs up or down?

I have an XL and I guess all I can say is that it will be tight until your butts shrink a bit. I am not a fan of foil with pork, find no need for it. I have loaded my egg and burned for 32 hours at 250 with no reload, probably could have gone longer off needed. Best of luck, enjoy.Go Gamecocks!!!

I have an XL as well. Yes that is enough charcoal to run 16 plus hours. Wrapping is up to you, I'm not for wrapping but if you do you won't need 16hrs if your running 250 dome. And legs up

Legs up. And fill it up to where it is almost touching the plate setter. I don't wrap butts but I do ribs, so that is your choice. And if full of lump. 16 hours...no problem.1 XXL BGE, 1 LG BGE, 2 MED. BGE, 1 MINI BGE, 1 Peoria custom cooker Meat Monster.Clinton, Iowa

I have filled just to the bottom of the fire ring and did a 20+ hr smoke and have let it go for > 24hrs before finally shutting it down.

My XL burns .4 lbs/hr at 250. I can put in around 14lbs.
Fill up to the bottom of your stone and you will be fine. They don’t want a population of citizens capable of critical thinking. I always fill to the top of the fire ring on a low and slow. You never have to worry that you will run low. Just stir the ashes for the next cook and you're good to go for several more cooks.

It won't take 16 hours to cook that butt. Maybe 9-12.
